I Can No Longer Trust My Mother-in-law: The Unforgivable Mistake

My mate Emily is a single mum raising her six-year-old son, Oliver. His dad walked out before he was even born, leaving her to handle everything alone—nursery runs, doctor’s appointments, sleepless nights. Oliver suffers from severe food allergies, so their life revolves around hospital visits, allergy tests, and strict diets.

Emily’s meticulous about what he eats—no dairy, chocolate, nuts, or certain fruits. Even a tiny slip means rashes, itching, or worse, swelling and exhaustion. But like plenty of mums, she’s got a difficult relative: her ex-mother-in-law, Margaret, who reckons she knows better than doctors. “Back in my day, kids ate whatever and turned out fine,” she always says.

Once, Emily had an emergency dentist appointment—a tooth extraction with anaesthesia, meaning she’d be gone half the day. No kids allowed at the clinic, so reluctantly, she left Oliver with Margaret. She even packed a bag of safe snacks and wrote out a list: “No chocolate, biscuits, or shop-bought juice.” Margaret nodded, all smiles, pretending to take it seriously.

When Emily returned, she knew straightaway something was wrong. Oliver’s face was blotchy, his cheeks flushed, and he was sluggish, scratching his arms. When she asked, he admitted, “Gran gave me cake, sweets, and tea with jam. She said you were overreacting and a bit of sugar wouldn’t hurt.”

Furious, Emily confronted Margaret. “How could you ignore the doctor’s orders? He could’ve had anaphylaxis!”

Margaret just scoffed. “Oh, don’t be daft! Allergies? Rubbish. We never had this nonsense growing up. You’re just coddling him. He’d be stronger if you fed him proper food instead of all this diet malarkey.”

That was the last straw. Emily realised she could never trust her again. She cut contact to the bare minimum, even though Margaret still thinks she’s in the right.

I’m not judging Emily—I back her completely. This wasn’t about petty arguments or parenting styles. It was about her boy’s health, possibly his life.

What baffles me is how some people refuse to accept modern medicine. They cling to outdated ideas, insisting, “We turned out fine,” ignoring that allergies are real and dangerous.

How could anyone be so reckless with a child’s wellbeing? Just to prove a point?

So tell me—would you forgive in a situation like this? Would you give a second chance, or was Emily right to draw the line? Could you ever trust someone who dismisses a doctor’s advice when it comes to your kid?
