At the Start of Our Relationship, It Was Made Clear: No Participation in Household Chores.

Right from the start of our relationship, Oliver made it crystal clear—he wasn’t about to lift a finger around the house. He said he earned the money and provided for the family, so all the chores were my responsibility. Back then, blinded by love, I agreed to those terms, convinced I could handle everything on my own.

Years passed, and the exhaustion piled up. I work just as much as he does, but when I come home, it’s endless—cleaning, cooking, laundry, helping the kids with homework. Meanwhile, Oliver kicks back after work, thinking he’s done his part. Whenever I ask for help, he shuts me down, reminding me of our “agreement.” In my lowest moments, I’d vent to my sister, Charlotte. She’d point out that I knew Oliver’s stance from the beginning and chose to accept it. Charlotte always said changing a grown man is near impossible, especially when he’s set in his ways.

When our little one came along, things got worse. I’d hoped fatherhood would soften Oliver, but he stayed the same. All the baby duties fell to me, while he blamed work stress and insisted providing financially was his only job. I felt alone and unheard. Chatting with my mates only made it harder—their husbands pitched in with the kids and chores, no questions asked. I couldn’t help comparing, and the resentment kept growing.

One day, I finally snapped and poured my heart out to Oliver. He listened, but his response was exactly what I expected: “You knew what you signed up for. I haven’t changed, and I won’t. If you’re not happy, figure out what to do next.” Those words cut deep. It hit me then—I’d been waiting for a change that was never coming.

Now I’m stuck at a crossroads: stay in this marriage, hoping for a miracle, or make a clean break. I know I deserve better—respect, support, a real partner who shares the load, not just the good bits. Every woman deserves that much.
