After a Baby Was Left in My Care, My Life Unraveled: I Wasn’t Prepared for This Twist

**Diary Entry**

The moment that baby was left on my doorstep, my life fell apart—I was utterly unprepared for such a turn of events.

When we welcomed an adopted child into our lives, everything changed, and sadly, not for the better.

Emily and her husband, Daniel, had been raising their eight-year-old daughter, Charlotte. Though their family seemed complete, they felt they had so much more love to give another child. Despite their relatives’ warnings, they decided to adopt a boy from an orphanage.

“Mum and Dad didn’t support the idea,” Emily recalls. “Mum said, ‘Why take in a stranger’s child? Who knows what genes or illnesses he might carry?’ But Daniel and I were certain—we ignored the doubters.”

After months of paperwork and legalities, five-year-old Oliver joined their family. Quiet and withdrawn, they believed time and affection would help him find his place.

From the start, Emily and Daniel chose never to tell Oliver he was adopted. They hoped he’d forget his past and feel like one of them.

But within months, unsettling things began happening. One evening, Emily found Charlotte’s favourite doll sliced to pieces with scissors.

“I was horrified,” she says. “Oliver just stood there, silent. When I asked why, he only shrugged.”

Emily took him to a child psychologist, who explained this might stem from trauma at the orphanage—patience and love were key. They tried, yet things grew worse. At nursery, Oliver told staff his parents starved and punished him. Soon, social workers arrived at their door.

“It was humiliating,” Emily admits. “We gave our children everything, yet suddenly we were accused of neglect.”

The investigation found no wrongdoing, but the damage was done. Daniel insisted Oliver be returned.

“I can’t live like this,” he told Emily. “He’s tearing us apart. Charlotte’s afraid of him, and I feel helpless.”

Torn between loyalty to Daniel and responsibility for Oliver, Emily prayed things would improve. Instead, Oliver grew aggressive—threatening his parents and sister.

Eventually, Daniel demanded a divorce: return Oliver or lose him.

“The hardest choice I’ve ever made,” Emily confesses. “I loved Daniel, but I couldn’t abandon Oliver.”

After the split, Emily struggled to raise both children alone. Exhausted and overwrought, she suffered a breakdown.

“I realised I couldn’t give Oliver what he needed,” she admits.

With a heavy heart, she returned him to the orphanage. Painful as it was, she knew it was best.

“I hope he finds a family who can give him what I couldn’t,” she says, tearfully.

Now, she focuses on Charlotte and piecing herself back together.
