My marriage to Oliver lasted six years, and from the start, we lived in my flat. A few years ago, I inherited a one-bedroom apartment from my grandmother, for which I was endlessly grateful. Over time, Oliver and I bought a more spacious home, and his parents, who lived in a small village and couldn’t afford to move, asked if they could stay in my old flat. I took pity on them and agreed—they’d always been kind to me.

They’d lived in my flat for years, paying only the utilities. I wanted passive income from renting it out, but they couldn’t afford London prices. Their options were limited: return to their village, where they still owned a home, or find extra work to cover rent.
His parents knew about their son’s betrayal but never stood by me. Of course, they weren’t responsible for his actions, but if Oliver’s feelings for me had faded, why hadn’t he said so before stepping out? In the end, I decided to make him suffer by asking his parents to leave. I explained I could no longer let them stay rent-free. It upset them, but I had no choice.
I hoped kicking them out would make Oliver realize the gravity of his mistake. His parents were shocked and admitted they’d sold their village home to settle in the city, leaving them stranded. Still, I didn’t care—they could always turn to Oliver’s new fling for help. Now, I’m looking for tenants to secure extra income.
Opinions among my friends were split: some called it fair, others said I should’ve shown mercy and given the elderly time to find somewhere. But I’d had enough of being taken for granted. They’d lived there four years without paying rent—only utilities.
What stings most is how Oliver could do this when our marriage was happy, with no fights. Maybe he just grew bored and sought excitement elsewhere. It hurts that he never valued my support, the care I put into our home, or the meals I cooked. I welcomed him and his parents into my life, only to be repaid with betrayal.
I told Oliver I wanted a divorce. He begged for forgiveness, but my mind was made up—once a cheat, always a cheat. I ordered him to move out immediately and gave his parents a deadline, as new tenants would soon move in. They have their son to thank for this.
