Stop Whining, I’m Hungry! Is a Second Day of a Cold Really a Reason to Stay in Bed?

“Stop whining, I’m starving! Since when does a two-day cold justify lying around?”

My friend Emily’s husband never grasped simple things, and that became the breaking point in her life. We’ve known each other since primary school in Manchester, and though I always saw her as a strong woman, the fact she endured that marriage for three years still shocks me.

Her husband, Oliver, was the type who only saw things his way. Migraine or a fever over 100 degrees? Didn’t matter—dinner had to be on time. To him, being a wife meant being the cook, cleaner, nurse, and therapist all in one, yet he couldn’t be bothered to return even basic kindness.

When Emily was hospitalised with flu complications, he never visited. The moment she got home, his first words were, “Who’s making dinner, then?” When she said she hadn’t slept all night, he scoffed, “Oh, cry me a river! Too tired? Stop slacking and get moving—I’m starving!”

Emily got up—but not to the kitchen. She went to the registry office. Then she packed her bags and left for her parents’ house in York. No arguments, no scenes. Just like that.

And she was right. When love turns to contempt, staying only breaks you. Now, Emily’s voice carries steel again. I hear it—that old strength. And I know, without a doubt, she’ll be alright.
