My Mother-in-Law Enforces Her Rules While My Husband Stays Silent—I’m at My Breaking Point

My mother-in-law keeps forcing her ways on us, and my husband just stays silent. I can’t take it anymore.

Sometimes I step back and wonder how I ever ended up married to a man who, at thirty, still lives in his mum’s shadow? His name’s Oliver—looks perfectly grown-up, responsible, independent. But really? Total mummy’s boy. Won’t so much as choose a takeaway without her say-so.

And guess how we met? Through *her*, of course. I was working as a shop assistant when this older woman started coming in regularly. She’d go on about how lovely I was, said I felt like family. Then one day, she brought her son along—*”Oliver, look at this one, she’s an absolute treasure!”* And he fell for it. Started taking me out, and before I knew it, we were married.

His mum gave us the flat. She moved in with her elderly boyfriend, telling us, *”Live here, save up for your own place. I want grandchildren!”* Sounded kind at first, but there were strings attached. Soon enough, she was back in our lives… with her mop, her casserole dishes, and her *rules*.

Every Monday morning feels like groundhog day. I spend my weekends scrubbing the place spotless, doing laundry, cooking. Then I come home Monday—*everything’s* been rewashed, re-ironed, rearranged. A note on the table: *”Made you a roast, sorted your wardrobes, mopped the floors. Love, Mum.”* Polite, but it makes my blood boil. Is this my home or hers?

I told Oliver I can’t live like this. He just shrugged. *”She’s only trying to help! She means well.”* As if I should be *grateful* for her taking over. But her *help* just makes me feel like a guest in my own house. She even washes my underwear! Rifles through our cupboards, moves my things. Privacy? Forget it.

The worst part? She doesn’t do this at *her* place. We visited once—it was tidy, sure, but lived-in. At ours? Military precision, like she’s measuring the gaps between the cushions. A stranger in my home, and I can’t say a word because, as my own mum reminded me, *”It’s her flat. Just put up with it till you buy your own.”*

But how do you *put up with it* when every day feels like you’re being pushed out of your own role? I’m not saying she’s a bad person. She’s not. But she’s *obsessed* with control. To her, we’re not a married couple—we’re her kids, still needing her to call the shots.

And Oliver? Won’t set a single boundary. He’s fine with it. Thinks we’ve got it *made*. Meanwhile, I feel like an outsider in my own home. He doesn’t see how much it hurts me. Or he won’t.

Then she drops the bomb: *”I want grandchildren. Once you have one, I’ll be round more—helping out, babysitting.”* And that terrifies me. Because I *know* what *helping* really means—she’ll move in. Set the routines, the meals, the rules. I’m suffocating *now*—if that happens, I’ll snap.

I finally gave Oliver an ultimatum: either *he* talks to his mum, or I will. Doesn’t matter whose flat it is. She gave it to us to *live* in, so she needs to respect that. I’m not a handbag she can rearrange on a shelf. I’m his *wife*. This is my home too, and I deserve a say in how it’s run. Even if the deed isn’t in my name.
