I Can’t Live with My Husband’s Grandmother Anymore—It’s Pure Torture!

“I can’t stand living with my husband’s grandmother any longer. It’s absolute torture!”

Sometimes I feel like I’m not in a flat but in a museum where nothing can be touched. For months, I’ve been begging my husband to move out, even just to rent somewhere, because sharing a home with his gran is pure misery. She forbids touching anything—every little thing, even dusting leads to a row. Everything’s “an antique” or “sentimental,” and if I do something my way, she clutches her chest, claims her blood pressure’s spiked, and within half an hour, every relative knows because she’s phoned them all to whinge about how ungrateful we are.

Before we married, we took out a mortgage on a flat. Our parents gifted us a hefty sum for the wedding, and I was over the moon—finally, our own place where I’d be in charge. We both worked, managed the payments, and things were fine… until I found out I was pregnant. A complete shock—I was on contraception. At first, I was stunned, even considered termination, but my husband and parents all said, “Absolutely not!”

I kept working until the birth, and money was tight but manageable. After our daughter was born, everything collapsed—we were down to one income. My husband took on odd jobs to keep us afloat, scrambling for any extra cash. Moving back with my parents wasn’t an option; their place was cramped, and his parents already had his younger brother and wife living there.

That’s when his gran stepped in. She offered to let us move in—her three-bedroom place had space. I barely knew her, but she seemed decent enough. We agreed, started renting out our flat, and financially, things eased… but not emotionally.

At first, it was bearable. Then came the nightmare. In her house, you can’t touch a thing. Not even the baby! If our daughter grabs something or crawls where she shouldn’t, Gran has “a heart attack.” She accuses me of letting the child wreck things on purpose to finish her off! When my husband gets home, she stages this whole drama: I’m a terrible mother, neglectful, disrespectful. And him? He just shrugs like it’s nothing. To him, this is normal. To me, it’s unbearable. I’m on the verge of a breakdown.

I beg him: Let’s move back to our flat. Even if we’re skint, even if we scrape by—at least it’s not this madness. He tells me to tough it out. Says once my maternity leave ends, we’ll go. But how I’m meant to last till then, I’ve no idea.

I suggested swapping roles: he stays home, I go back to work. Let him endure a day with “sweet old Gran.” He refused. So I gave him an ultimatum: If we’re not out by next month, I’m taking our daughter and moving to my parents’ in another city. He went quiet. Now I’m waiting. Not for words—for action. Because I can’t take another day of this.
