38, Single, Child-free, and Absolutely Happy

At 38 years old, I am unmarried, childless—and, you know, I feel utterly content. None of the supposed woes people imagine for someone like me trouble my days. I live in a bustling market town, with a respectable job, my own flat, and a sturdy motorcar—all secured through my own efforts, without leaning on anyone. What’s more, I support my parents, who reside in a quiet village. The amusing part? No one believes I’m a day over 28. Perhaps it’s because I carry a youthful air and a lightness in my heart.

My name is Eleanor Whitmore, and I’ve always known my own mind. After grammar school, I attended university, studied business, and then set about building a career. Now, I oversee a department in a prominent firm. The work is engaging—it allows me to travel, meet interesting folk, and learn new things. My wages suffice not just for living but for saving, too. I adore what I do, and that, I reckon, is why my spirits stay so high.

Five years ago, I bought my flat—modern, with tall windows, right in the town centre. I furnished it to my taste: airy, with comfortable furniture and a few paintings I’ve collected abroad. My motorcar isn’t lavish, but it’s dependable—perfect for zipping about town or visiting my parents in the countryside. I often spend weekends there when I crave respite from the bustle. I lend a hand with chores, bring groceries, and sometimes patch up things around the cottage. They’re grateful for my visits, and I’m glad to make their lives a touch easier.

People often ask why I’m neither wed nor a mother. To some, it seems peculiar, especially in a woman my age. But I don’t feel as though I’m missing out. I’m open to love, but I shan’t hurry. Should I meet someone I wish to share my days with—splendid. If not, I shan’t lament. I’ve dear friends—we catch films, attend concerts, host suppers. I’ve hobbies, too: I practise yoga, dabble in watercolours, and sometimes take dancing lessons. My days are so full, there’s no room for boredom.

Some suspect I must harbour secret sorrows. Not so. I simply live as I please. I won’t mould myself to others’ expectations or wed because “it’s time.” At first, my parents fretted—Mum especially. She dreamt of grandchildren, but in time, she saw I was happy in my own way. Now she teases, “Ellie, you’re like a film star—forever young and fancy-free.”

Occasionally, I hear whispers: “At your age, it’s too late for a family.” But I don’t believe in “too late.” Life isn’t a timetable where all must run on schedule. I’ve known women who bore children after 40 and were splendid mothers. If I ever wish for a child, I’ll consider it. For now, I’m content as I am—revelling in my freedom, whisking off on trips when the mood strikes, spending my weekends just so.

My youthfulness likely stems from good blood and sensible habits. I keep active, eat well, and tend to my skin. But the true secret is my disposition. I don’t let troubles sour my days. If something goes awry, I find a way—no use grumbling. Maybe that’s why folk mistake me for 28? I laugh and say, “Because I live lightly!”

My parents are my bedrock. They’re proud I’ve made my own way. I visit often, bearing gifts, mending odds and ends, settling bills. Mum bakes my favourite scones; Dad spins tales of his youth. Such moments are precious. I’m thankful they’re hale and hope they remain so for years.

What next? I’ve no notion, and it doesn’t trouble me. I fancy a grand tour someday—perhaps to France or the Orient. I aim to grow in my profession, maybe start a venture of my own. And I’ve half a mind to get a dog—a fluffy companion would bring cheer. Life, to me, is an adventure, and I’m ready for new chapters. The heart of it all? I’m happy as I am. And that’s what truly matters.
