My Son Won’t Speak to Me Anymore… When Did He Become a Stranger?

My son won’t speak to me anymore… And I don’t know when he became a stranger to me.

I have only one son—my flesh and blood, my rock, my pride. He’s thirty now, and I’m sixty-one. I devoted my whole life to him. For him, I worked myself to the bone, stayed up nights, prayed. He’s from my first marriage. Now he has his own family—a wife, and recently, a long-awaited daughter, my granddaughter. You’d think I’d just live and be happy, especially since we live so close, just across the courtyard. But no… We hardly talk anymore.

Before the baby came, things were different. We were close. He’d drop by often, ask my advice. Sometimes he’d just come for tea and a proper chat. I felt needed. Now there’s a wall between us. He’s distant, as if I’ve betrayed him somehow. I can tell he’s hurt, but I can’t fathom why.

I’ve tried gently asking him—he won’t say a word. I tried through his wife, but she just says, “Sort it out between yourselves.” How can I, when he avoids even looking at me?

When he was little, he was often ill. I carried it all alone. My second husband was kind but weak-willed. My son never saw him as a father, and he never pushed it. All the worries, the problems, the discipline—it all fell on me. I was mother and father both. We went through so much—a bad crowd, suspicions of drugs, desperate teenage rebellion. I had to be firm. Not out of cruelty, but fear. I was terrified of losing him. I wasn’t perfect, no. But I was the one who never gave up.

Yet the breaking point was something trivial. I asked him to help with my computer. I don’t understand all the updates, the apps… He used to help without a second thought. This time, he sighed, stood up, called his wife, and walked out. Didn’t even take the scones I’d baked for him. Just left. And since then—silence.

At first, I thought he’d cool off, come back. But a month passed, then two, then three… Nothing. He doesn’t even tell me when he’s abroad—I hear it from neighbours. I only see my granddaughter when his wife brings her. She’s polite but detached. No extra words. And when I try to ask about him, she just says, “Not my place. You should talk to him.”

I’ve stopped calling—I don’t want to seem desperate. I thought, maybe if I step back, give him space, he’ll miss me. But no… The more I stay quiet, the further he drifts.

The cruelest part isn’t his anger or resentment. It’s the silence. The complete indifference. As if I’ve stopped existing to him. No visits, no calls, no asking how I am, how my health is. He didn’t even ask when I was in hospital—his wife only found out by chance.

I don’t understand. I never shouted, never meddled, never forced myself on them. I helped when asked. Gave money, gave support. Don’t I at least deserve a proper conversation?

I lie awake at night. Turning over every word, every moment, searching for where I went wrong. Did I overlook something? Hurt him without realising? Or am I just not needed anymore?

They say children grow up and drift apart. But not like this—not in funeral silence. I’m not a stranger. I’m his mother.
