Tired of Waiting – Took Matters into Own Hands

“Tired of Waiting—Took Matters Into My Own Hands”

When Emily first met William, she thought she’d finally found the one—the kind of real, solid, grown-up forever she’d always dreamed of. He wasn’t just handsome, clever, and attentive; he made it clear straight away that he was serious about settling down. They grew close quickly, moved in together after a few months—first in a rented flat with a “let’s see how it goes” mindset. But it all felt effortless, like things just fell into place.

Life didn’t dull their feelings. They could compromise, take care of each other. Making dinners, watching old films, evening walks through London, planning weekends, summers, their whole lives. Friends already called them “husband and wife.” Everyone was waiting for that next step—but it never came.

The first year, Emily didn’t push. She was sure William would propose when the time was right. But when year two and three passed with no change, she started worrying. It stung watching her friends post registry office photos captioned “Officially a family!” while she didn’t even have a ring—no hint, no conversation.

Then came the blow—William’s mum got seriously ill. Everything became about hospital visits, prescriptions, chasing specialists. Wedding talk faded into the background, and Emily understood. She stayed quiet, supportive, never pressured him. When his mum went into recovery, she breathed a sigh of relief—surely now they could think about the future again. But William stayed stuck in “not the right time” mode. Marriage just… disappeared.

Emily kept waiting. Then she realised—enough. She didn’t want to just be the convenient woman by his side. She wanted to be his wife. A family, kids, a home. And, frankly, some security—it’s scary committing to a mortgage when you’re legally nobody to each other. So she made a move.

Bought the ring herself. Booked a cosy table at a favourite restaurant. Picked the exact date they’d first said “I love you.” When William saw the little box, he froze—flustered, muttering excuses about always meaning to do it. But he said yes. No fireworks, no grand speech, but yes.

Her mates were stunned. Some admired her guts; others thought she was daft, making a fool of herself. But she just felt lighter. Because now—it was settled.

Emily didn’t wait for someone else to decide. She sorted the paperwork online, set the date, hunted for a dress, booked the venue, lined up a photographer. William helped—not with enthusiasm, but he helped: tasted cake samples, sorted the car hire, picked out their rings. Things rolled along.

Sometimes she catches her friends’ looks. Married ones with pity—”hope she doesn’t regret this.” Single ones with envy—”she actually went for it.” But she’s just moving forward. Because she’s tired of living in limbo. Because she deserves happiness. Because she loves him—and hopes it’s not for nothing.

Maybe it wasn’t by the book. Maybe some’ll say, “Women shouldn’t propose.” But then, maybe if more women stopped waiting around, there’d be more happy families?

Was she right? Maybe. Did it look ridiculous? No. It looked like the choice of a grown woman brave enough to take control of her own future.
