Siblings Unite for a Birthday While Drama Unfolds

My brother James got married six years ago. Since then, neither I nor our parents have ever stepped foot inside their home. Every holiday, birthday, or family gathering always takes place at our parents’ spacious house on the outskirts of Manchester. Mum cooks piles of food, sets the table, and still sends James and his wife Eleanor home with containers full of homemade roast dinners and puddings.

When James first married, Eleanor’s birthday came around a few months later. Mum, full of enthusiasm, decided to surprise her—we bought a cake, picked out a lovely gift, and got ready to visit. Mum called Eleanor to let her know, but she coldly replied that she wasn’t planning to celebrate. Mum, refusing to back down, insisted:
“We’ll just pop in for tea and cake! You won’t have to lift a finger, love!”

In the end, we went anyway. But instead of a warm welcome, we were stunned—Eleanor met us outside, muttering that the flat “wasn’t tidy,” and refused to let us in. Dismayed, we handed her the cake and gift right there on the patio before leaving. Since then, all celebrations have been at Mum’s, and we try not to mention that awkward moment.

Eleanor once bluntly told our parents:
“You’ve got such a big house—plenty of room for guests! We’ve only got a one-bed flat—where would we even put everyone?”

I had to bite my tongue. Surely a landlord’s daughter could host her husband’s parents and sister, even in a small flat? It’s not a crowd—just three people! But we stayed quiet to keep the peace.

Now Eleanor’s five months pregnant—the first grandchild for our parents, and Mum’s beside herself with excitement. She keeps ringing James, asking how Eleanor’s feeling, if she needs anything. But recently we learned that Eleanor quit her job early in the pregnancy. Mum panicked:
“Is she ill? Does she need my help?”

James reassured her—Eleanor’s fine, just “taking it easy.” We were baffled. James and Eleanor always lived lavishly—posh restaurants, holidays, designer clothes. No mortgage—the flat was inherited from Eleanor’s grandmother—so they splurged freely. But now their income’s halved, and their lifestyle’s crumbling. James tried explaining they needed to budget, but Eleanor refuses to cut back.

She confessed she quit out of fear of “catching something at work.” While caution is one thing, their finances are in shambles, yet she still expects luxury. Now, amidst all this, James unexpectedly invited us to his birthday—at their place! Mum and Dad were shocked. Dad even joked:
“Will she finally let me try her cooking?”

Mum was thrilled, looking forward to a family evening. I rang Eleanor to confirm details, but instead of a calm chat, I got hysterics. Sobbing, she snapped that she didn’t want us there:
“I’ll have to clean, cook! I’m pregnant, it’s exhausting!”

I tried to soothe her:
“Ellie, keep it simple. Roast some potatoes, toss a salad, bake chicken—done. We’ll bring dessert. It’s just dinner for five. What’s the fuss?”

I even offered to order takeaway to help, but she kept whining about getting the place spotless. I lost patience:
“It’s a one-bed flat! How hard is wiping floors? Do you only clean when guests come?”

Finally, I gave an ultimatum:
“If you really don’t want us, fine. We’ll call James instead.”

I told Mum, who agreed. When we explained it to James, he exploded:
“She doesn’t work, just sits home! Can’t she cook one meal and tidy up? You’re coming! We can’t afford a cleaner or takeaways—she’ll manage!”

His words hung like storm clouds. Now we’ve all fallen out, and the only thing worse than Eleanor’s sulking and eye-rolling is forcing ourselves where we’re clearly unwanted.

But it breaks my heart to hurt James. He’s so excited—his first family gathering at his place! How can we not go? It’s his day, and his wife’s moods aren’t his fault. Do we swallow our pride and risk a miserable evening, or refuse and crush him? There’s no good answer, and the clock’s ticking. Love for my brother against disdain for his wife—how do you choose?
