I Cut Ties with My Mother After She Sided with My Ex and Blamed Me for Our Divorce

I cut ties with my mother because she sided with my ex-husband and blamed me for our divorce.

My mother made her priorities clear long before I finally left my first husband. She treated him like a saint while painting me as the cause of every argument and misunderstanding. After the divorce, she kept in touch with him and never missed a chance to tell my current husband how “perfect” her first son-in-law had been.

Naturally, these conversations poisoned my relationships with both my husband and my mother. Eventually, I made a decision: if Mum valued my ex so much, she could keep him. I was done with the drama.

James and I married right after university. Ours was a whirlwind romance—everything happened fast, and within months, we had a lavish wedding. Mum adored him, practically singing his praises. At first, it seemed sweet, then it grew irritating.

For the first six months, everything was wonderful—care, love, tenderness. But then something broke. My husband became aggressive, short-tempered, and cruel. Regular shouting matches began. I went to my mother’s several times, hoping for support, but all I got were accusations. She always took his side.

Whenever she visited, she’d start right away: the house wasn’t clean enough, dinner wasn’t cooked right, the laundry wasn’t done properly. No matter how much I explained—work exhaustion, feeling unwell—she didn’t care. “A woman’s place is in the home! If you don’t like it, let your husband say so! He’s handsome, but you—no looks, no charm, and a terrible temper!” She repeated it like a mantra.

I reminded her she’d been divorced twice herself, but that only brought more insults. James and I lasted just over two years. The final straw came when he hit me. I packed my things in silence and left. The next morning, I filed for divorce.

Mum was furious. She insisted if a man raised his hand, I must have driven him to it. James came begging—apologising, threatening suicide. Mum piled on the pressure, but I stood firm. A few months later, I moved out, unable to bear her lectures about how I’d failed to keep “such a good man.” It took me a year to recover.

Then Max came into my life—gentle, caring, understanding. We took it slow and married after a year and a half. I hid the relationship from Mum, knowing how she’d react. Sure enough, at our first meeting, she compared Max to James—and not in his favour.

At her birthday party, she invited my ex and spent the evening praising him while belittling Max. We left early. After that, she called constantly, doubling down: I’d married a nobody, a man beneath me. My pleas to stop only made her nastier.

One day, I woke up and realised—my mother was destroying me, my marriage, my mental health. I feared for the future—for my husband, whom I loved, for any children we might have, whom she’d also tear down. I wouldn’t let anyone tell my children they weren’t good enough, just as she’d done to me.

So, I made my choice: no more contact. I wanted to live my life. I wouldn’t let her poison ruin another marriage. If my ex mattered so much to her, she could have him. I chose to be with someone who truly loved and valued me.

And for the first time in years—I felt free. Sometimes, walking away is the bravest thing you can do for yourself.
