Our daughter is hell-bent on marrying a layabout, and we’re horrified!
In our cosy little town up north in England, where winters drag on and folks know the value of a warm hearth, my husband and I always gave our daughter the very best. Now, though, our hearts are breaking with worry—our sweet girl is set to marry a lad who seems good for nothing but empty promises and lazing about.
My husband, Oliver, and I know how tricky it is to find *the one*. Back in my day, my parents were dead against Oliver. Mum fretted over his obsession with tinkering with old Minis, convinced it was a reckless hobby, while Dad dreamed I’d marry his best friend’s son—a well-off engineer. But I fell head over heels for Oliver, won over by his kindness, hard work, and the way he looked after me. I defied my parents, we tied the knot, and time proved I’d made the right call. Together, we raised our daughter, Emily, pouring everything into her so she’d never want for a thing.
Emily’s always been our pride—clever, driven, with a spark in her eyes. Two years ago, she went off to university in Manchester and met a lad called Jake. At first, we were thrilled—young love’s a lovely thing! But the more we learned about Jake, the more our worry grew. Now Emily’s announced they’re getting married, and Oliver and I are beside ourselves. Because Jake? He’s bone idle, and that’s putting it kindly.
We’ve seen it with our own eyes, time and again. Every summer, Emily picks up work—waitressing, temping in offices—saving up so she and Jake can holiday in Cornwall. And him? Nothing. In two years, he hasn’t lifted a finger to earn a penny. Emily shoulders it all while he lounges about like it’s his birthright. It breaks our hearts—our girl deserves better!
Once, Jake’s parents were doing up their flat, and we offered to help, hoping to smooth things over. We turned up with tools, paint, wallpaper. And Jake? Sat in his room glued to his PlayStation, not even bothering to offer us a cuppa. There we were, two middle-aged folks sweating over their skirting boards, while a perfectly able young man couldn’t be bothered to lift a controller unless it was wireless. It hit me like a bolt—is this really who my daughter wants to build a life with?
Jake lives in a fantasy world, gaming for hours, barely speaking to real people unless it’s to moan about how “everything’s rubbish.” I can’t picture Emily happy with someone like that. She’s like a shining star, and he’s dragging her into the mud of his apathy. This marriage will be a trap—but how do we make her see it?
We’ve tried talking to Emily, but she’s smitten and deaf to reason. Every word about Jake is met with tears and “You just don’t *get* him!” I see her torn between love and logic, and it tears me apart. I don’t want her repeating mistakes she’ll regret forever.
Every night, I lie awake picturing Emily, full of hope, walking down the aisle to a man who’ll never appreciate her. I’m terrified she’ll sacrifice her dreams for someone who won’t even get off the sofa. How do we get through to her? How do we save her from a choice that could break her? My mum’s heart screams this marriage is a disaster—but how on earth do I stop it?
