Our daughter is dead set on marrying a complete layabout, and we’re horrified!
In our cosy little town up north in England, where winters drag on and folks cherish the warmth of home, my husband and I have always tried to give our daughter the best. But now, our hearts are breaking with worry—our girl is set on marrying a lad who seems good for nothing but empty promises and sheer laziness.
My husband, Oliver, and I know how hard it is to find the right one. Back in the day, my parents were dead against Oliver. Mum was terrified of his obsession with cars—he was always tinkering with some old banger, and she thought it was dangerous. Dad, on the other hand, dreamed of me marrying his mate’s son, a well-off engineer. But I fell head over heels for Oliver. His kindness, hard work, and devotion won me over, and I went against my parents’ wishes. We married, and over the years, I’ve never doubted that choice. Together, we raised our daughter, Emily, pouring everything into her so she’d never want for anything.
Emily was always our pride—bright, driven, full of dreams. Two years ago, she started uni in the nearest city and met this bloke, Jordan. At first, we were happy for her—young love is so sweet! But the more we got to know Jordan, the more uneasy we became. And now Emily’s announced they’re getting married. Oliver and I are horrified because Jordan’s a proper slacker, and that’s not just gossip.
We’ve seen it with our own eyes—more than once. Every summer, Emily picks up shifts—waiting tables, temping in offices. She saves up so they can go on holiday in August. And what does Jordan do? Nothing. In two years, he’s not even tried to get a part-time job. Emily’s carrying them both, while he just coasts along like it’s nothing. It breaks our hearts—our girl deserves better!
Once, Jordan’s parents decided to redecorate their flat. We offered to help, hoping to smooth things over. Brought tools, paint, wallpaper—the lot. And what happened? While Oliver and I were up ladders, stripping walls and hanging paper, Jordan sat in his room glued to his computer, gaming. Didn’t even offer us a cuppa. Here we were, near strangers, sweating in their house, while a grown lad couldn’t lift a finger. It hit me like a ton of bricks—is this really who my daughter wants to spend her life with?
Jordan lives in his own little digital world. Spends hours gaming, barely talks to anyone, and when he does, it’s only about his next level-up or how “everything’s rubbish.” I can’t picture Emily happy with someone like that. She’s like a shining star, and he’s pulling her into the mud of his apathy. I know this marriage will trap her—but how do I make her see that?
We’ve tried talking to Emily, but she’s smitten and won’t listen. Every word about Jordan feels like an attack to her. “You just don’t know him like I do!” she yells, tears in her eyes. I can see her torn between love and our warnings, and it rips me apart. I don’t want my girl making mistakes she’ll regret for life.
Every night, I lie awake imagining Emily, full of hope, walking down the aisle with someone who doesn’t value her or her efforts. I’m terrified she’ll give up her dreams for a man who can’t even be bothered to get off the sofa. How do we get through to her? How do we stop her from a choice that could ruin everything? My mother’s heart is screaming—this marriage is a disaster—but I don’t know how to save her.
