We’re Here for You: A Story of Colleagues Pulling Me from the Abyss

Emily was still asleep when the sharp knock at her door shattered the quiet of the Saturday morning. Jolting awake, she sat up in bed. Who could be here this early? She wasn’t expecting anyone.

When she opened the door, she froze—standing on her doorstep were her coworkers, Emma, Charlotte, and Lily. Emma clutched a thermos, while Charlotte held a box with a freshly baked Victoria sponge.

“What are you doing here?!” Emily gasped. “It’s the weekend!”

“Exactly why we’re here,” Emma said, already stepping inside like she owned the place. “Where’s your daughter?”

“Sophie’s still asleep… What’s going on?”

“Nothing’s going on,” Charlotte said gently. “Pack her things and get yourself ready. You’re coming with us to a countryside retreat. No arguments.”

Emily stood there, stunned. She couldn’t process it. A trip? Just like that? Right now?

“But I told you at the office I couldn’t go—”

“And we know why,” Lily cut in softly. “We’re ashamed we didn’t notice sooner.”

Emily paled.

“What are you talking about?”

“We know everything, Emily. That you’ve been raising Sophie alone since the divorce, that your ex isn’t paying child support, that you’ve been scraping together money for her first year of school while skipping meals yourself—and never saying a word to anyone.”

Emily stayed silent. A lump rose in her throat.

“I… didn’t want to complain. I thought… I could handle it.”

“And you have,” Emma said firmly. “But handling it doesn’t mean barely surviving. We’re your friends, Emily. And friends don’t let friends drown.”

“We’ve sorted everything,” Charlotte added. “The retreat’s covered—our treat. Food, travel, everything. All you need to bring is yourself and Sophie.”

Emily looked down, her cheeks burning. Accepting help felt impossible—but staying silent was worse.

“But… I don’t even have clothes—”

“You have *us*,” Emma said sternly. “Charlotte brought some of her daughter’s old things—all in good condition, perfect for Sophie’s school year.”

“We’ve got stationery too,” James said, stepping into the hallway with a bag. “Pens, notebooks, sketchpads—everything she’ll need.”

“I… don’t know what to say.”

“Don’t say anything,” Lily said, pulling her into a hug. “Just believe this—you deserve more than just struggles. You deserve a break, some care, and people who’ve got your back.”

Two hours later, their little group was on a coach heading out of London. Sophie sat on Emily’s lap, hugging her new backpack, while Emily stared out the window, her hands curled around the warm thermos. And for the first time in months, there was warmth in her chest too.

It hadn’t worked out with her husband. But as it turned out, she’d been incredibly lucky with the people around her.
