Broken Trust: A Tale of Betrayal Beyond Forgiveness

“Oh, Lorraine! Hello, love,” stammered her mother-in-law, flustered as she opened the door. “We weren’t expecting you till the day after tomorrow.”

“Good evening, Margaret,” Lorraine replied calmly, hugging the woman. “I had to go back to work on Monday—they cut my holiday short. Thought I’d come home early. Is my husband here with Ethan?”

Margaret hesitated. “Oliver’s here, but Ethan… he went to see off his colleague, Emily. Didn’t you two talk?”

Now it was Lorraine’s turn to be surprised. “He didn’t answer my calls. Who’s Emily, if you don’t mind me asking?”

“Oh, it’s nothing, really,” Margaret fumbled. “Oliver brought Ethan for the weekend, and Emily… she was just waiting in the car. I… I invited her in for tea and cake.”

“Of course you did. Where are they now? How long ago did they leave?”

“About two hours back,” Margaret murmured, avoiding her gaze.

“Lovely,” Lorraine said icily before marching off to find her son.

Inside, she seethed. She hugged five-year-old Ethan, gathered their things, and left with a curt goodbye. On the drive home, Ethan chattered happily.

“Dad and Auntie Emily took me for ice cream, then we rode the carousel and saw Granny! It was so fun!”

Lorraine nodded, but her thoughts swirled like a storm. For the first time in ten years, she’d gone on holiday alone—a spa retreat she’d won for her years of service. A chance to heal, after years of battling ulcers and stress. Oliver had insisted, “Go. Mum will help; I’ll manage.”

She’d doubted but let him convince her. Now her son was gushing about cosy cafés with “Auntie Emily”—a woman she’d never heard of, already bonding with her child and sipping tea with her mother-in-law.

Late that night, her phone rang.

“Lorraine, hi… My phone died, sorry…” Oliver mumbled.

“Hi. Where are you?”

“At Mum’s. Ethan and I stayed the night. Everyone’s asleep…”

“How odd. I’m lying in our bed. Ethan’s asleep in his room, and you’re not here. Hiding in the wardrobe, are you?”

Her voice was controlled, but fury simmered beneath.

Silence. Then the call dropped.

Forty minutes later, he stood in the doorway.

“Don’t start a row. You found out anyway. Yes, there’s Emily.”

“Have you lost your mind? You brought that woman to your mother’s? Let my son spend time with her?!”

“I wanted to see if she’d fit in. With my parents, with Ethan…”

Lorraine nearly staggered. This wasn’t a nightmare. This was her life.

“You—you tried to slot your mistress into our family? What’s next, introducing her to me?”

“Don’t exaggerate. I didn’t know you’d be back.”

Tears spilled—not because he’d cheated, but because he spoke as if discussing a new telly.

He left to sleep.

The next morning, she dropped Ethan at nursery and went to Margaret’s.

“Margaret, just tell me one thing: why? What did I do to you? I nursed you after your hip fracture, made preserves for your cottage. Why betray me?”

The woman looked down. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know before you left. After… I couldn’t say no to Oliver. He’s my son.”

“And what am I?” Lorraine whispered.

No answer. She turned and walked out.

That evening, Oliver returned.

“I suppose the divorce is obvious. We’ll discuss splitting the flat.”

“What flat? The one my dad left me a month before we married?”

“But I put money into it. The renovations—”

“Your parents’ money, not yours. Consider it their investment in their grandson’s home.”

His face twisted. “Half of it’s mine!”

“Forget it,” she said firmly. “After what you’ve done, there’s nothing to split.”

He screamed, hurled insults, clawed for the cruelest words. Lorraine pressed against the wall. Ethan woke, terrified, and ran out—saving her. Oliver wouldn’t dare continue in front of him. He left.

He filed for divorce. The flat stayed hers.

A year passed.

Ethan visited his father at first, then stopped—Oliver’s new wife, Emily, rejected the boy. She clashed with Margaret too.

Lorraine decided: time to end it. She sold the flat and moved to Brighton, where that spa had been. There, she’d start anew. For the first time—just for herself.
