**Diary Entry – 22nd March 2024**
I’m only 49, but my younger sister seems convinced I’ve no life of my own and should be a free babysitter for her ten-year-old son. I adore Alfie—he’s the best nephew anyone could ask for—but I’m not willing to sacrifice my entire existence just to mind him constantly. This all started years ago, and if anything, it’s only gotten worse.
**How It Began**
My sister, Hannah, is seven years younger than me. Always a bit spoiled—the baby of the family, coddled by everyone. When Alfie was born, I was thrilled to be his aunt. He’s a brilliant lad—clever, funny, great company. I’d often have him over weekends, take him to the park, bake scones with him. But over time, Hannah began treating my help as an obligation.
After her divorce, she was on her own with Alfie. She works long hours, stays late, even travels for business now and then. I get it’s tough, so I’ve always pitched in—minding him, picking him up from school, helping with homework. But these past few years, she’s acted as if I owe it to her. *”You’re free—no husband, no kids, so you may as well make yourself useful,”* she’s said. I was gobsmacked. Just because I’m single doesn’t mean I don’t have a life!
**Life at 49**
I’m 49, work as an accountant at a small firm, and have my own passions. I go to yoga, meet my girlfriends for tea, take painting classes. I’ve even been saving for two years to visit Italy—Rome, Florence, the lot. But Hannah acts like my time belongs to Alfie. *”You’re his aunt—it’s your duty,”* she insists. If I push back, she adds, *”It’s not like you’re doing anything important anyway.”*
Recently, it got ridiculous. Hannah announced she’d signed Alfie up for extra English lessons—in the evenings, halfway across town—and expected me to drop everything to collect him. I refused, explaining I had my own plans, including yoga. She took offence: *”So your hobbies matter more than family? Alfie means nothing to you?”* It stung. Of course he matters, but why must I give up everything for him?
**The Nephew I Love**
I do love Alfie. He’s wonderful—tells me about his football games, shares school gossip, we laugh at cartoons together. But I’m not his mother. I haven’t the energy—or the desire—to be a full-time nanny. Worse, Hannah’s shoving her responsibilities onto me. Just last week, she asked me to lecture Alfie about his poor marks because *”he listens to you more.”* I did it, but that’s not my job!
I’ve tried talking to her. Said I’ll help—within reason—and suggested hiring a sitter or asking her in-laws (they live nearby too). She just waved me off: *”Sitters cost money, and you’re free.”* It’s obvious she’s using me because it’s convenient.
**Finding Balance**
Now I’m stuck. I don’t want a feud, and I’d hate for Alfie to think I don’t care. But I’m exhausted being the “on-call aunt.” I want my own life—without guilt for not jumping at Hannah’s every demand. Maybe I’ve been too soft. Perhaps it’s time to set firmer boundaries.
If anyone’s been in this spot, tell me—how do you say “no” to family without wrecking things? Or am I truly being selfish? I could use an outside perspective.
**Lesson Learned:** Blood doesn’t entitle anyone to your time. Love shouldn’t come at the cost of losing yourself.
