A Troublesome Friendship: A Tale of Fearful Loyalty

The Friend Who Made Me Sick: A Story of Toxic Friendship

I’ve always been a private person, preferring solitude to the noise of crowds. After marrying James, I felt I’d found everything I’d ever needed—warmth, understanding, support. Our little world of two was enough for me. My friendships were few but strong: two close friends, living in different cities, the occasional phone call or message. It was rare but real, and it suited me perfectly.

Then there was her. Melissa.

I can’t quite explain how she slipped into my life. We met by chance, chatted, exchanged numbers. At first, it was all harmless—birthday wishes, small favours, gestures of care. She wove herself into my days so subtly I barely noticed, until it was too late to pull free. Everything about her seemed sweet. Until it wasn’t.

She was from a different world. Around my friends and colleagues, her blunt familiarity made me cringe. Her “jokes” would land in silence, forcing me to fill the air with awkward laughter or excuses. “Melissa means well,” I’d say. “Don’t judge her by appearances.”

She had an uncanny sense for when I had guests. She’d arrive uninvited, always with a bottle of cheap sparkling wine, even when the company found it tacky. And then—the toast. Long, effusive, painting me as some sort of saint. “Charlotte and I,” she’d declare, “might not share blood, but we’re cut from the same cloth.” Humiliating, every time.

James despised her. He said I let her manipulate me out of weakness. He’d counter her theatrics with exaggerated compliments before disappearing, leaving me stranded in her absurd little performance. We fought constantly about her—he called me blind; I called him a snob.

Twelve years. That’s how long she lingered. And in all that time, nothing truly disastrous happened. Until it did.

On my birthday, she gifted me lace lingerie. After one wear, my skin erupted in a rash. The doctor called it a synthetic allergy. Cotton only from then on. I never thought to blame Melissa.

Months later, my wavy hair turned coarse, tangling into knots, falling out in clumps. I suffered until I tossed out the hairbrush she’d given me. Slowly, it recovered.

Then money vanished from my purse—the one she’d bought me for Christmas. James muttered, “Who else would pick such a hideous thing?”

Our daughter, Emily, grew sick after every visit—nausea, fever, vomiting. James joked, “Em’s allergic to Melissa.” I laughed. I shouldn’t have.

Our cat, Whiskers, had been with us seven years—gentle, lazy, docile. Once, while we were away, Melissa offered to look after him. When we returned, he lunged at me, tearing my shoulder open. After that, he was never the same. Whenever he acted strange, someone would say, “Ever since he stayed with Melissa…”

I still didn’t understand. Until the day everything snapped into place.

As Melissa left, I absently grabbed the remote and switched the TV to the hidden camera feed in the hallway. No one knew about it but us.

On screen, I watched her crouch by our door… scrubbing the mat. Then she stood, pulled something from her bag, and tucked it above the frame.

Numb, I ran my hand along the door’s edge—and pricked my finger. Three rusted needles jutted out. Beneath the mat, strange grains were arranged in a pattern. I never would’ve seen them—the cleaner always lifted the mat to mop.

I wrapped the needles and grains in paper and waited for James.

He called me a fool—the first time in fifteen years of marriage. He wasn’t wrong. He gathered every gift she’d ever given us, from cards to brooches, and dumped them in a lake. “So no one else finds them.”

I called Melissa. Only one sentence: “You know what you did. Make sure we never meet again. For your own sake.”

Then I had the house blessed. And just like that—she vanished.

With her gone, the oddities stopped. Emily was fine. Whiskers settled. Only the synthetic allergy remains, a silent warning: beware of Greeks bearing gifts.

I never believed in curses. Now… I’m not so sure.
