The Note That Changed Everything: A Schoolyard Tale of Crushes and Jealousy
Oliver was rummaging through his backpack as usual when he spotted a peculiar folded note tucked between his textbooks. Carefully unfolding it, his heart did a little somersault:
“Hey! I really fancy you. If you’re up for it, meet me behind the school at four today.”
The lad was baffled, even a bit flustered. He had no clue who could’ve left it. But curiosity got the better of him. At precisely four, he was loitering by the bike sheds when—lo and behold—he spotted Emily. The shy, quiet new girl.
“Was this you?” he asked, holding up the note.
“What?” Emily blinked, as if he’d just asked her to explain quantum physics. “Me? No way!”
“Then why are you here? You’re… waiting for me?”
“Well… Charlotte said you fancied me…” Emily mumbled, turning the colour of a ripe tomato.
Oliver frowned. Something wasn’t adding up.
**The Move That Changed Everything**
Emily had relocated to a new neighbourhood when her parents upgraded to a posh semi-detached. Though the house was lovely, her old school was now miles away. Her parents insisted: “There’s a perfectly good school just down the road. You’ll adapt!”
Emily protested—loudly. Starting Year 10 in a new place, where cliques had formed ages ago, was terrifying. But no one listened.
“You’ll make friends!” her mum chirped. “You’re such a sociable girl!”
Turns out, Mum was wrong. Emily had always struggled with small talk, and this school was no exception. At first, the other kids were curious, but she clammed up, avoided eye contact, and soon, they left her alone.
Emily didn’t mind—much. She was different. Quiet, observant, secretly watching one boy: Oliver. The class clown, the life of the party, everyone’s favourite.
She fancied him. Badly. But the thought of speaking to him made her palms sweat.
**Green-Eyed Monsters in the Classroom**
Charlotte noticed. Confident, popular Charlotte, who’d fancied Oliver forever but was firmly in the “just mates” zone. Seeing Emily’s shy glances, irritation prickled. Time to put the new girl in her place.
“Let’s prank her,” she whispered to her mates. “Slip Oliver a fake note from a ‘secret admirer,’ then tell Emily he fancies her. Watch her humiliate herself!”
Her friends hesitated but eventually agreed. Charlotte ambushed Emily with saccharine sweetness:
“Rumour has it Oliver fancies you. Want me to find out?”
Emily’s eyes lit up. That sealed it for Charlotte.
“He’ll meet you after school,” she said. “Four o’clock. Behind the bike sheds. Keep it hush-hush, yeah?”
“Okay,” Emily whispered, equal parts thrilled and petrified.
**The Twist No One Saw Coming**
The next day, Charlotte slipped the note into Oliver’s bag. He read it—confused, intrigued.
He showed up. And there was Emily.
“Was this you?”
“No… I heard you—”
Oliver pieced it together. He’d seen Charlotte’s handiwork before.
But Emily had come. That meant…?
“Since you’re here, does that mean you *do* fancy me?” he grinned.
Emily turned scarlet. She nearly bolted, but Oliver caught her arm.
“Since we’re both here… Fancy a walk?”
Charlotte, lurking behind the bins filming the whole thing, gaped. This wasn’t the plan. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
Worse? The next day, Oliver and Emily walked into class *together*. Laughing. Smiling. Sitting side by side.
**The Aftermath**
“Was this some revenge plot?” Charlotte cornered Oliver at break.
“Nope. You set us up, actually. Cheers for that. We get on brilliantly.”
Charlotte refused to believe it. Surely it’d fizzle out.
But months passed. They stayed together. School ended. They moved in. Then came the wedding.
And only then did Charlotte finally accept it: her little prank had backfired spectacularly.
**Moral of the Story?**
Before you scheme or tease—think. Sometimes karma’s got a wicked sense of humour.
