**Diary Entry**
Today was meant to be inspiring—a chance for my young pupils to dream big. I organised a Careers Day at the primary school, inviting professionals from all walks of life to share their work. We had a doctor, a seasoned solicitor, a fresh-faced software engineer, a towering firefighter, and finally, a police officer with his K-9 partner, Rex.
The children were enthralled—laughing, asking questions, trying on helmets. But when Rex stepped into the room, joy turned to unease. The moment he crossed the threshold, he growled. His ears perked, then he lunged forward, barking furiously—straight at *me*. Before I could react, he was on his hind legs, paws against my chest, snarling.
The class gasped. I staggered back, arms raised, my voice trembling. “He—he’s never done this before,” the officer stammered. “He’s trained, completely non-aggressive!”
They pulled Rex away. My hands shook as I muttered, “Perhaps it’s my perfume… something he dislikes.”
But the officer’s expression darkened. Later, he quietly showed Rex an old mugshot from criminal records. The dog erupted again.
Suspicions grew. That evening, the officer ran my details—my passport was only seven years old, my birth records didn’t quite match. By midnight, the truth unraveled.
Fifteen years ago, I was part of an armed bank heist. Two accomplices went to prison; I was presumed dead in a warehouse fire. I changed my name—Emily Hart—altered my appearance, fled to Surrey, and built a new life. A model teacher, beloved by students and parents alike.
But scent doesn’t lie. Rex had been trained to track fugitives. My past clung to me like smoke.
They arrested me at dawn. The school is in uproar. My students are devastated. How could their Miss Hart—the woman who taught them kindness, curiosity—be a wanted criminal?
