The Performance

Olivia couldn’t wait for the workday to end, her heart fluttering at the thought of seeing her beloved husband waiting outside the office. Together, they’d drive to their favorite café—the same one where they’d met five years ago to the day.

She rushed out the doors and spotted James leaning against their car, his warm smile welcoming her.

“Hi, Jamie,” she murmured, pressing into his embrace as he kissed her cheek.

“Hey, love. Ready for our café?” he asked, though it sounded more like a statement. Olivia grinned and nodded, secretly hoping for a gift.

Their time at the café passed sweetly, but when no present appeared, James finally said, “Let’s head home. Your surprise is waiting there.”

“Really? What is it? Why didn’t you bring it?” she teased, curiosity sparkling in her eyes.

“You’ll see soon enough,” he replied, his tone playful and mysterious.

Back home, James led her to a sleek, parked car and pressed the key fob, unlocking it with a chirp.

“For you, my love. Hope you enjoy the ride.”

Olivia froze, stunned. A car? She’d never expected this. Throwing her arms around him, she gasped, “Jamie, thank you! I always say I have the best husband in the world. I love you so much.”

And she meant it. James worked tirelessly—weekends, overtime—all to spoil her and save for their dream country house. Once they had that, they’d start a family. For now, they lived comfortably in Olivia’s inherited three-bedroom flat.

“Darling, it’s yours. I knew you’d love it.”

That evening, they celebrated—their anniversary and the new car—since James couldn’t drink at the café.

The next morning, Olivia arrived at work in her shiny red car, beaming. Her colleagues swarmed her, eager to know what James had gifted.

“My Jamie got me a car,” she sighed, closing her eyes briefly. “Honestly, he just *gets* me. Can you believe we’ve never had a proper row in five years?”

“Congratulations!” they chorused.

Some were genuinely happy for her. Others? Not so much. Like Nicole—James’s old schoolmate, who’d always resented Olivia. Nicole had loved him since their school days, and now, watching Olivia glow, she seethed.

*Why do some people have it all?* she thought, forcing a smile. *We’ll see how long that happiness lasts.*

Olivia, oblivious, never imagined her joy could breed such malice.

Later, James called—another freelance job. He’d be late. She sighed but understood. Every pound saved brought them closer to their dream.

After work, Olivia stroked her car’s steering wheel. “Time to go home, beautiful.”

A quick stop at the mall, where she found the perfect wristwatch for James. “He’ll love this,” she mused, tucking the wrapped gift beside her.

But as she slowed near home, preparing to park, a dull *thud* jolted her. A man sat in the road, clutching his leg.

“My God—did I hit you?” She leaped out. “I’m so sorry! Let me call an ambulance—or I can drive you to hospital?”

He shook his head. “It’s just a bruise. Ice’ll sort it.”

Reluctantly, she invited him inside—Liam, he introduced himself. As she bandaged his leg, he smirked. “Wouldn’t mind getting hurt more often if it means seeing you.”

Uncomfortable, she avoided his lingering gaze. Then he paused, eyeing a photo on the shelf.

“You know him?” he asked, feigning surprise. “Wait—let me guess. Your brother?”

Olivia frowned. “You know James?”

“Course. He’s married to my sister. Works like a dog—freelance gigs, saving for a house. Hardly home, but, well… priorities, eh?”

Her stomach dropped.

*No. This can’t be real.*

Liam left swiftly, sensing her distress. But his words festered.

*Two families? A child with another woman?*

When James returned, she pretended to sleep, too raw to face him.

Days passed in silence. Liam kept “coincidentally” appearing—outside work, near her home. “Fate,” he’d say with a grin.

Finally, over coffee, she confided in him.

“James isn’t my brother. He’s my *husband*.”

Liam’s act crumbled. “The bastard’s living a double life! My sister’s pregnant by him. You should *leave* him.”

Olivia’s resolve wavered. But that evening, a call shattered everything—James was in hospital, injured at work.

At his bedside, his colleague Mark assured her, “He’s only ever talked about you, Olivia. There *is* no other family.”

The truth unspooled. Liam was Nicole’s brother—fresh out of prison for extortion. Their plot? Destroy Olivia’s marriage so Nicole could swoop in.

When James awoke, Olivia clung to his hand. “I’m so glad you’re here,” she whispered.

Soon, they were home. She gifted him the watch; he promised another surprise. Then, softly, he said, “Liv… maybe we shouldn’t wait for the house. Let’s start our family now.”

Tears welled in her eyes. “I want that more than anything.”

His thumb brushed her cheek. “Love you, wife.”

Happiness blossomed anew—and months later, so did their son.

Some performances, after all, aren’t meant to be believed.
