**Diary Entry**
I’d been counting down to this holiday in Spain like it was the Promised Land. The last six months at work had been mad—coming home drained as a wrung-out dishcloth, only to start my second shift: homework, dinners, checking school planners.
I’d found the hotel, snatched the cheap flights, packed three suitcases—even remembered my six-year-old son Oliver’s teddy bear and my nine-year-old daughter Emily’s power bank for her tablet. I was the mastermind behind *Operation Family Holiday*.
And there we were. Sun, sea, the kids squealing with delight. Bliss, you’d think. But my husband, James, had other ideas.
With the air of a conquering hero, he flopped onto a sun lounger, slapped on his sunglasses, and vanished into his phone like a man in hibernation. His sole contribution? The occasional flip to even out his tan.
Meanwhile, the *”Mum, can I…?”*, *”Mum, let’s…!”*, *”Mum, look!”* chorus played on loop—directed solely at me. James pretended deafness. By day two, I realised my holiday had become overtime in a hotter climate.
Then I saw it—a spa leaflet. *”Two hours of paradise: chocolate wrap and massage.”* Good grief, I nearly toppled off my chair just imagining it. That cocoa scent practically wafted off the page. A sign. I *deserved* this.
I tiptoed over to my dozing husband. *”Darling,”* I cooed, *”could you watch the kids for a bit? I’d love a massage.”*
One eye cracked open. *”Seriously, Alice? That’s a woman’s job. I’ve slogged all year for this break—let me rest.”* And with that, he shut his eyes, conversation over.
Hurt? Furious, more like. *I’d* worked myself ragged too! A hot, volcanic wave of rage boiled up inside—but screaming wouldn’t help. Then I spotted them: the hotel’s pirate-themed entertainers, all bandanas and cheeky grins. And just like that, inspiration struck.
With my sweetest smile, I sidled up to them. *”Lads, see that chap on the lounger? My husband. Secretly, he’s a *pirate* at heart—just too shy to admit it. Fancy making him today’s ‘Captain’ for the treasure hunt?”* For good measure, I slipped one a tenner. His eyes twinkled. *”Leave it to us!”*
Back at the lounger, I watched the show unfold. Moments later, a booming announcement: *”Attention! We’ve found our bravest, cleverest pirate captain—James, step forward!”*
James jerked upright, bewildered, as the kids—Emily and Oliver—shrieked, *”Daddy’s a pirate!”* and jammed a bandana on his head. He spluttered protests, but the entertainer clapped him on the back. *”No time, Captain! The treasure won’t wait!”*
And me? I was already wrapped in a fluffy robe, waving goodbye as I vanished into the spa.
James valiantly played his role—scampering after clues, unearthing ‘gold’, returning sweaty but grinning, the kids gazing at him like he’d sailed the Seven Seas.
That evening, I innocently asked, *”How was the high seas, Captain?”* He grumbled into his wine. I smoothed his ruffled hair. *”You’re wonderful. Look how they adore you.”*
He glanced at the kids spreading seashells on the bed, then at me—and finally smiled. *”Was just a bit of fun,”* he muttered. But his eyes were warm.
For the rest of the trip? He *volunteered* with the kids. No armour, just Dad.
Sometimes, all a man needs is a treasure map, a nudge in the right direction… and a little love.
