**Diary Entry**
He refused to marry his pregnant girlfriend. His mother backed him, but his father stood up for the unborn child.
Ill never forget that evening. Tom walked in, shoulders hunched, and blurted it out before hed even taken off his coat.
Dad, Ive got news. The neighbours daughter, Emily shes pregnant. Its mine.
Arthur, my father, paused for a long moment before answering calmly.
Then marry her.
Are you joking? Im too young for this. Its not the right time for a family, and we werent even serious
Serious? Dad laughed, sharp and bitter. So you were man enough to chase after her, but now, when its time to own up, youre just a boy. Fine. Without another word, he called for my mother. Margaret! Come here.
Mum walked in, wiping her hands on her apron.
Whats happened?
Our sons got the neighbours girl, Emily, pregnant, and now he wont marry her. Then he fell silent, jaw tight.
Mum didnt even blink. Her face hardened.
And hes right. Why bring home the first girl who comes along? These modern girls are cunningfind someone with money, trap them with a baby, then demand marriage. He should get a DNA test first. And anyway, we cant force Tom. Hes still young. Hes only humanits not easy to resist. But we shouldnt have to raise another mans child.
Dad sighed, voice low.
And if it *is* his?
If it is, are we obliged to take responsibility? Get the test done, then well see. She turned and walked back to the kitchen, leaving us alone.
Dad looked at me, weary. Son, I was young once too. I loved one girl but married another. Not for love, but because it was the right thing to do. Being a man isnt just about passionits about choices and consequences. Your mother was pregnant. I didnt know if I could love her, but I knew one thing: the child wasnt to blame. My blood, my conscience. And you know what, Tom? I never regretted staying.
Three months later, the DNA test came back clear: 99.9% probability Tom was the father.
So? Mum scoffed when Dad set the paper in front of her. Fine, its his. But that doesnt mean Emilys setting foot in this house. I wont have it!
Tom sat silent, fists clenched, not daring to look at Dad. His choice was clearhed sided with Mum.
Dad stood slowly, voice quiet but steel-edged.
Since youve both made your decision, now hear mine. As long as I live, my grandchild will want for nothing. Ill buy land, build a house, and everything Ive worked for will go to that child. But you two? Youll get nothing from me. I wont be part of this shame. Tom, as of today, youre no longer my son.
Mum exploded. Have you lost your mind? Youd disinherit your own flesh and blood?!
Dad didnt answer. He turned and walked out, ignoring her shouts. Tom stood frozen in the silence, stunned. But we both knewwhen Arthur gave his word, he meant it.
**Lesson:** A mans true measure isnt in what he takes, but what hes willing to stand for.
