Ex-Husband Promises Our Son an Apartment but Demands I Marry Him Again

Im sixty years old and live in Manchester. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that after all Id been through, after twenty years of complete silence and peace, the past would come barging back into my life so brazenly. And the hardest part? The one stirring it all up was my own son.

Back when I was twenty-five, I was head over heels in love. Williamtall, charming, full of lifeseemed like the answer to every dream Id ever had. We married quickly, and a year later, our son Oliver was born. Those early years were like something out of a fairy tale. We lived in a tiny flat, shared dreams, made plans. I worked as a teacher, he as an engineer. Nothing could shatter our happinessor so I thought.

But over time, William changed. He came home late more often, lied, grew distant. I tried to ignore the rumours, the strange perfume on his clothes, the excuses. But eventually, the truth was undeniable: he was cheating. Not just oncerepeatedly. Friends, neighbours, even my own parents knew. And me? I clung to the marriage, for Olivers sake. I held on far too long, hoping hed change. Then one night, I woke up to an empty bed and realisedit was over.

I packed our things, took five-year-old Oliver by the hand, and moved in with my mother. William didnt even try to stop us. A month later, he moved abroadwork, he claimed. Soon, he found another woman and erased us from his life. No letters, no calls. Nothing. And there I was, alone. My mother passed, then my father. Oliver and I faced everything togetherschool, hobbies, illnesses, triumphs, A-levels. I worked double shifts to make sure he lacked nothing. Relationships? No time. He was my whole world.

When Oliver got into university in Cambridge, I supported him as best I couldcare packages, money, encouragement. But I couldnt buy him a flat. I simply didnt have the means. He never complained. Said hed make it on his own. I was so proud.

Then, a month ago, he came to me with news: he was getting married. My joy didnt last. He was fidgety, avoiding my eyes. Then it spilled out:

Mum I need your help. Its about Dad.

I froze. He said hed reconnected with William, whod returned to England and was offering him the keys to a two-bedroom flatinherited from his grandmother. But on one condition: I had to remarry him and let him live in my home.

My breath caught. I stared at my son, unable to believe what I was hearing. He kept going:

Youre alone Youve got no one. Why not give it another try? For me. For my future family. Dads changed

Silently, I stood and walked to the kitchen. Kettle, tea, trembling hands. Everything blurred. Twenty years Id carried everything alone. Twenty years without a single word from him. And now he waltzes back with a deal?

I returned to the living room and said calmly, No. I wont do it.

Oliver exploded. Shouting, blaming. Said Id always put myself first, that Id robbed him of a father, that I was ruining his life now. I stayed quiet. Every word cut deep. He didnt know how Id stayed awake at night from exhaustion. How Id sold my wedding ring to buy him a winter coat. How Id gone without so he could have meat on his plate.

Im not lonely. My lifes been hard, but its been honest. Ive got my job, my books, my garden, my friends. I dont need a man who betrayed me onceand now slinks back out of convenience.

Oliver left without saying goodbye. He hasnt called since. I know hes hurt. I understand. He wants whats best for himself, just as I once did. But I wont sell my dignity for a few square feet. The price is too high.

Maybe one day hell understand. Maybe not soon. But Ill wait. Because I love him. Truly, unconditionallyno flat, no ifs. I brought him into this world out of love, raised him with love. And I wont let love become a transaction.

As for my ex-husband? He belongs in the past. Right where I left him.
