Oh, My Son Has Arrived!” exclaimed Euphemia with Delight.

Ah, youve finally arrived, my boy! Evelyn exclaimed as Nicholas slipped his shoes off at the doorway.
Hey, Mum, he said, pausing. Im not alone. He nudged a skinny lad with glasses and a backpack forward.
Oh, dear, my grandchild is here! Is that Sherry or Andy? I cant tell without his glasses.

Nicholas lowered himself onto a chair.
Put those on. This is Victor, my well, my son born out of wedlock. Remember when Zara and I took a year apart? I fell in love with Valerie then, and Victor was the result. I foolishly put my name on his birth certificate, he sighed.

Evelyn scolded him gently. Dont babble about that in front of the child. Hes too young to know about your tangled past. Victor, go to the sitting room and watch the telly while your father and I sort things out.

The boy slipped out quietly and headed to the next room. Evelyn whispered, Does Zara even know about him?
She never liked the idea of my sons wifeshe was always quarrelsome and meddlesome.

Nicholas shivered. What, Mum? If shed found out, shed have packed her bags long ago. I feel sorry for him; I built him up from scratch with my own hands.

Evelyn sighed. You really are a mess, arent you? Not a proper man, just a drifter. Zara has had you under her thumb all your life. How did you manage to bring a child into the world on the side? And why bring him to me? Zara will find out and Ill be in trouble.

Nicholas, nervous, tried to explain. Valerieshes like a snakedecided to get married. She ran off south with a new lover for a month, can you imagine? Then she called me, saying, Take the boy wherever you like, even bring him home. I told her Id gone mad; I already had a wife, and shed throw us out. She warned me shed make life hard if I didnt comply. Ill give your Zara the birth certificate, and youll have to sort it out yourself. Thats the end of it for me. She barely forgave Valerie, didnt speak to me for six months. So I thought Id let the boy stay with you for a month, then Id come back for him, he muttered, never meeting his mothers eyes.

Evelyn shook her head. You were that way as a child and you havent changed a bit. If anything goes wrong, Ill help. Fine, what shall we do with him? Keep him here. But tell mehes not from our family, is he? She hesitated. Is he really yours?

Nicholas waved his hand. Hes mine, no doubt. Valerie isnt a saint, but Im a loyal fool.

The room fell silent. Evelyn sprang up. What am I doing standing here? Lets at least get him something to eat.

Nicholas rose. Sorry, Mum, but Ive got to go. Zaras waiting at home. Ive told her Im heading to town for spare parts. Feed Victor and Ill be off.

Evelyn embraced her wayward son and whispered, Take care, my dear.

Victor ate quickly, eyes never leaving the plate.
Want more? Evelyn asked, pitying his speed.
No, thanks, he replied, standing.

Go out for a walk while I finish dinner. Whats in your bag? she asked.
Things, he muttered.

Are you going to wash them yourself, or should I? Evelyn inquired.

Victor looked at her, frightened. I dont know how. My mother always did the laundry.

Evelyn lifted his small backpack. Alright, Ill check and rinse whatevers dirty.

He stepped out, and she began sorting through his modest belongings: two Tshirts, a pair of shorts, and a couple of underwear.

Not much, she murmured, shaking her head. Not even a warm sweater. Typical little mothers lot. She soaked the clothes in a basin and turned to bake a cherry pie.

A shout rang from the street. Evelyn rushed out, wiping flour from her hands.

Whats happened?

Victor wailed, clutching his leg. A goose pecked me! It hurts, tears streaming down his face.

What were you doing near the geese? They were out grazing, and you were in the yard, she asked, examining the red bruise.

I just wanted to watch them, he sniffed.

Never have you seen geese before? she wondered.

I have, but I never got close, he whispered.

Alright, lets get you inside; Ill rub some ointment on that. She took his hand and led him back.

After dinner, she tucked him onto the sofa and lay awake, unable to sleep. How had life turned so tangled? She would never have sent her own little Victor to a strangers house. Yet here he was, his trousers more precious than gold to her.

A soft sobbing reached her ears. She leaned toward the boy, Whats wrong, love? Not liking it here?

He sat up, eyes wide. Theyll take me away to a boarding school when Uncle Victor and Aunt Zara arrive. I heard them say theyll hand me over to a care home, only coming back for holidays. I dont want that; I liked it with my mum. Im not needed by Uncle Victorhe never even says my name. Youre kind, Grandma, but Im useless to you too.

Evelyns heart tightened. She wrapped her arms around his thin frame. Dont cry, Victor dear. I wont let anyone hurt you. Should I speak to your mother and keep you with me? We have a good school here, caring teachers. Well go mushroompicking, berrypicking, even milk the cow. Youre skinny now, but a good glass of milk will give you strength. Dont believe me? Tomorrow Ill introduce you to Paul, a solid boy whos as sturdy as a bun. Want that?

He clutched her neck. I want it. Will you keep your promise?

Evelyn kissed his forehead gently. Of course I will.

Years passed. Valerie occasionally visited, bringing gifts, but always hurried away as Victors uncle Victor pressed him onward. Nicholas showed up now and then. Zara learned of Victor and blamed Evelyn, saying she didnt need grandchildren, only her own little perks.

Evelyn didnt mind. The frail boy had grown into a robust young man. Each morning she prepared his favourite breakfasts, peeking out the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of him.

One day a young soldier entered the house, calling softly, Grandma, Im here. Where are you?

She rushed to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. Victor, my dear grandson!

Will you go back to Mum? he asked, setting down his fork. Which mother? The one who left me and only sent trinkets once a year?

No, he answered calmly. Youre my mother now, and thats final. He began to eat.

Evelyn brushed away a tear, grateful for the grandson who would be her comfort in old age.

And so she learned that love, no matter how tangled its roots, can bloom anew when tended with patience and honesty. The true lesson was simple: family is not just blood, but the kindness we choose to give each day.
