One Day You’ll Realise How Much I’ve Changed Over the Years.

Sometimes youll notice that Im growing older. My hands tremble when I fasten my buttons, and at lunch I might let a spoon slip or get a stain. Please dont be angry; be gentle with me. Remember how I once patiently taught you everything, back when you couldnt even hold a spoon or dress yourself. If I keep repeating the same thing, dont cut me offjust listen.

Do you recall how you begged me to tell the bedtime story over and over until you fell asleep in my arms? If I occasionally refuse to get a wash, dont scold me. Think of the little tales I invented to lure you into the bath when you stubbornly resisted.

If I cant keep up with new gadgets, cant wrestle with a smartphone or the telly, dont laugh at me. Give me a moment. Remember how I taught you to write your first letters, how we counted apples together and learned numbers while I was barely keeping my eyes open from exhaustion.

When I forget a word or lose my train of thought, be patient. Dont get upset. What matters to me isnt the exact words I say, but that youre here, listening, not turning away.

When my legs grow weak and I cant walk beside you, dont think Ive become a burden. Just take my hand, as I once took yours when you took your first steps around the house.

One day youll understand that despite all my mistakes, I have always wanted only the best for you. Every step I took, every decision I made, was an attempt to make your path a little easier than mine.

Give me a bit of your time, a pinch of patience. Let me lean on your shoulder, just as you once hid behind mine when you were hurt or frightened.

I love you, my daughter. I love you, my son. And I pray for you both, even when you no longer notice it.
