No matter how many times I begged my motherinlaw not to drop by late, she never listened. For some reason she believes she has the right to show up unannounced at our flat in Manchester. My little boy, Charlie, is just one year old and Ive settled him into a strict routine. If he doesnt fall asleep around eight oclock, I simply skip putting him to bed altogether, because the next two hours turn into pure torment.
Talking to Evelyn about it feels pointless. I ask her repeatedly not to arrive home at night, yet she doesnt get it. She cant see why visiting her oneyearold grandson at such an hour is a bad idea.
I work late, she says. Ill stay for half an hour, play with him, make him laugh, give him a little stir, and then youll spend the rest of the night trying to get the baby to sleep. After that the little one becomes fussy and cries.
What am I supposed to do?
Tonight I started the usual bedtime routine. James and I had already chosen a film to watch when the doorbell rang. James opened the door to find his mother standing there.
Its hard to put my feelings into words. I was angryfurious, actually. Charlie had just started teething again and was already restless, so we treasured every quiet moment. I tried to keep my cool; after all, shes my husbands mother.
I pretended to be in pain, clutched my cheek and shouted,
Just the right time! My tooth is achingI cant stand it. I dont want to go to the dentist alone. Stay with the baby a while longer, and well be out soon.
James didnt understand a word. He dressed quickly and we all left the flat.
What kind of drama is this? James asked.
At least we can get somewhere alone. And remember to switch off the phone! I replied.
We didnt get back home until after midnight. Evelyn had to take a taxi back. Charlie lay in his cot, surrounded by dirty nappy bags, stained clothes, toys, pacifiers and rattlesa complete artistic mess strewn about.
Evelyn looked exhausted, her makeup smudged, her skirt splattered with baby poo. Since then shes visited far less often and never stays late.
We eventually learned that setting clear boundaries, even with family, protects everyones peace of mind. Respecting each others limits turned a chaotic night into a reminder that love works best when its paired with mutual understanding.
