Husband Refuses to Let Daughter Use Inherited City Centre Flat—Should We Offer Our Teen Student the Apartment or Sell and Split Proceeds Equally Between our Children?

So, heres whats going on with us and I just need to talk it out. My husbands Aunt Vera left him a little flat in her will its really small and right in the heart of London. As you know, weve got three kids. Our eldest, Sophie, is nineteen now, off at uni; then theres Oliver, whos twelve; and Jack, hes only five. Were currently in a pretty spacious three-bedroom place, so everyones got their own space for now.

Well, Ive been at odds with my husband over what to do with this inherited flat. I suggested maybe Sophie could move in shes grown up now, and might be looking to start her own life soon or maybe even thinking about settling down. But Rob thinks that wouldnt be fair to the boys. His idea is to sell the flat and split the money equally three ways among the kids. Personally, that seems a bit silly to me. I mean, when theyre that young, all that money will just sit in a bank account and by the time they get to use it, they wont be able to buy much with it anyway, not with the way house prices are here.

Even if we do what Rob suggests, whatll happen? Money in bank accounts until the lads turn eighteen, and all Sophie probably gets is a cheap car or a short holiday. Im totally in the bird in the hand camp surely its better to at least set one of them up with a flat, and we can figure something out for the boys as they grow up. Who knows what might change by then?

Robs really worried that if we give the place to Sophie, itll cause tension between her and her brothers, that they’ll always be resentful, and therell be family drama. But honestly, I dont think theyll mind the boys dont really understand whats going on yet, so weve got time to plan and think ahead.

We havent breathed a word of any of this to Sophie yet since were still working out what to do. Besides, the flat needs a ton of work its practically falling apart. In its current state, its just not liveable, and with the way our finances look, theres no way we can afford to do up the place right now anyway.

I just dont know whos got the right idea me or Rob? Should I keep fighting my corner for Sophie, or is Rob right that splitting things is fairer? Or maybe theres something else we havent even thought of? Would love to hear what you think Im really torn.
