My name is Edward. Im 65 years old and have been married to Margaret for 34 years. Yet now, in this chapter of my life, Ive found myself falling deeply in love with another woman. I feel more lost and conflicted than I ever have before.
Margaret is 62. We have an adult son, Peter, whos married and has children of his own. Since Peter left home, Ive noticed that Margaret and I have grown apart almost like polite strangers sharing a house more than husband and wife.
When we retired, I dreamed of moving to the countrysidea tranquil life among fields and hedgerows. Margaret wasnt keen on the idea, but after some persuasion, she agreed. We bought a charming little cottage and moved in during the summer. I relished the country life, the peace, the garden, the birdsong, but Margaret hated it. She much preferred lounging on the sofa, reading her novels or catching up on television. She absolutely refused to help in the garden, insisting she didnt feel up to it. So, I found myself tending to everything on my own.
When autumn arrived we moved back to London. Margaret was thrilled, but I felt suffocated by the bustle and noise. After a week I packed a bag and returned to our village cottage alone. Life in the countryside suits me, I realised. Margaret stayed in the city, and now we only see each other on the rarest occasions.
It was there, in the village, that I met Joan. Shes 60, with a gentle way about her and a passion for art. At first, Joan kept some distance between us, but something between us quietly blossomed. Now, our relationship feels warm and genuinesomething I havent felt in years.
I find myself wanting a divorce, but Im terrified of what Peter would think. For now, I tell Margaret Im staying on to look after the house, but in truth, I spend most of my daysand many eveningswith Joan.
Margaret has no suspicion of any of this yet. I feel paralysed by the thought of hurting her, or upending our sons life. Im utterly torn about whether to finally tell Margaret the truth and start again, or to keep drifting in this in-between. Some days, I simply dont know whats right.
