After hearing this story from my friend, both my wife and I completely changed our attitude toward people, much like my friend and her husband did. We began spending less time with our friends and shared far fewer details about our private life. No, we didnt stop trusting them entirely, and were still on friendly terms, but we simply dont open up the way we used to. All this came about after an unpleasant situation happened to my friend and his wife.
They used to have a couple they were very close to; their friendship had lasted for years. The husbands, David and Tom, worked together, while their wives, Emily and Claire, studied at university together. Later, Claire got married, and a year after, she had a baby. She introduced Emily to one of Toms mates, and Emily and David started seeing each other.
However, life changed course. Tom quit his job and found a far better-paid role, and Claire also landed herself a well-paying position. The couples saw each other less often. Around the same time, Emily started going from one sick note to another (she was having more children in the meantime), which didnt go down well with her managers. Eventually, they found some excuse to let her go.
David worked tirelessly to provide for Emily and their four childrenhe wanted them to have a decent life. All things considered, they were getting along alright. They bought a spacious house, maintained a tidy home, and slowly, their incomes evened out, though they never became especially wealthy.
The other couple, Tom and Claire, didnt have kids; they focused on their careers, went on frequent holidays, and lived pretty much as they pleased.
One day, Emily and David decided to invite their old friends to their cottage in the Cotswolds. It seemed the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of London for a bit. They could have barbecues, swim in the river, and go walking in the woods. The weather, too, was simply glorious. Emily rang up Claire to invite them. Claire was delighted, but said shed need to discuss with Tom first and would ring back after. She left the phone on the table and forgot to hang up.
Thats when Emily overheard some truly shocking things about her family. It turned her world upside down.
As it turns out, Tom and Claire thought David and Emily were complete idiots who knew nothing about life. In their view, having four children meant they must be living hand to mouth, barely scraping by between Davids paydays. Their house was described as a dump, not fit for company, and the children were apparently little terrors who would be better off in care. Emily, they said, was a bore who never talked about anything except her kids.
In their words, David was a crude, unpleasant man who had nothing of interest to say. The call finally cut out, and David and Emily just sat there, dumbfounded, tempted to confront Tom and Claire straight away and tell them exactly what they thought. But before they could gather their thoughts, Tom rang, saying theyd love to come down for the weekend. David forced himself to reply warmly and then hung up.
David and Emily chatted about what had happened and agreed to wait and see how the visit went. When their guests arrived, they did so armed with cheap jams and equally inexpensive chocolates for the kids. Tom wasted no time with his remarks:
So, with those little wages, you cant even manage to buy proper treats! Well, never mind, weve got a nicely laid table here. Tuck in now, and you can help out aftertheres plenty to be done!
Emily and David sat there in disbelief, barely understanding what was going on, and then Claire chimed in:
Why havent you got children yet?
Were just not ready, theres still time, Emily replied.
I can see whats going on. Only oiks have children these daysclever people know to look after themselves first, Claire said with a sneer.
At that, David and Emily were speechless. It was clear Tom and Claire knew far too much, but had no way of guessing how. Their friends quickly made up an excuse and left early.
