He Kept Dashing to the hallway or the other room, then started leaving the house several times a day for all sorts of reasons. One day, when I went out to the shops, I found a letter in the post addressed to me—from him, sent during his absence. Its contents shook me: “Hello. I don’t want to deceive you anymore. You’re not the right person for me. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life with you. There will be no wedding. Please forgive me, don’t look for me and don’t call. I won’t be coming back.” So Brief, So Blunt, So Cruel… Only Then Did I Realise—He’d Been Running to Check the Post Box All Along. I Silently Destroyed the Letter, Never Breathing a Word or Letting Him Know Anything Had Occurred. But How Can I Live with a Man Who Doesn’t Want to Be with Me? Why Did He Marry Me and Pretend Everything Was Fine?

I simply cannot fathom why I ended up marrying him.

We tied the knot not long ago. I honestly believed my husband loved me wildly. There would have been no reason to doubt it, if not for something peculiar that happened. It wasn’t even about being unfaithful; what occurred was far more unsettling, almost bizarre.

It strikes me now that maybe I cared for him just a bit too much. I adored him, loved him deeply, and forgave him everything. He got used to this, you see; his confidence grew, and so did his ego. I imagine he thought that with a mere snap of his fingers, any woman would grovel at his feet. Yet truthfully, he isn’t exactly popular with others Anyone else would have pulled him up on his faults and never trusted him so blindly.

A little while before our wedding, he said he needed some time alone, wanted to get away on holiday to prepare himself for married life. I couldnt do anything about it, so I made my peace with his decision and let him go on this trip.

As he told me later, he wanted to escape civilisation, avoiding both the internet and his phone. He went off on his own to the Lake District, hoping to soak up the beauty of nature. I stayed behind, missing him with every ounce of my being. Each minute I waited felt endless, and my longing for him grew ever stronger.

He returned after a week. It was the happiest day of my life. I greeted him with all the warmth and affection I could muster, and cooked his favourite English meals.

But the next day, his behaviour became strange. He kept darting into the hallway or slipping away to another room. Soon after, he began leaving the house several times a day with flimsy excuses. One afternoon, while heading out to the local shop, I noticed a letter in the postbox. It seemed like any ordinary envelope, addressed to me from him, sent while he was away. But what I read inside shook me to my core. Hed written:

Hello. I can’t keep deceiving you. You’re not the right person for me. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life with you. There won’t be a wedding. I’m sorry, don’t look for me or try to call. I wont be coming back.

Just a few cold, brutal lines

It was only then I realised hed been running out to check the post each time. Quietly, I destroyed the letter and said nothing to him, never letting on that anything was amiss. But how am I supposed to live with a man who doesnt want to be with me? Why did he marry me and pretend everything was fine?
