You know, the second time I found out I was expecting, there was a knock at the front door and a young woman standing there with a baby in her arms. I never imagined Id be in a situation like that. It turned out I had no clue who Id been sharing my life with all those years.
I met Adam when I was fifteen; he was seventeen. Five years later we tied the knot, and within a year I was pregnant again. When our daughter, Ellie, was born, Adam was over the moon. He doted on her, took on extra shifts at the garage, and made sure we had everything we needed.
He bought us a spacious twobed flat in Croydon, and Ellie became his world. He drove her to nursery, to ballet class, and wed often stroll through the park together while she watched cartoons on the TV. My life felt pictureperfectuntil everything went sideways.
That afternoon, just as I was in the middle of my second pregnancy, there was another knock. A girl, looking about twenty, stood on the threshold with a newborn. I stepped aside and let her in. She introduced herself as Poppy, nineteen, and said she was Adams other partner.
Shed given birth to a son two weeks earlier and had decided to set things straight. She told me she and Adam had been seeing each other for two years and that she wasnt about to walk away. I called Adam and asked him to come over. His reply blew me away:
Love, weve got a good thing going. Im not planning to split up, but I wont abandon you or the kids either.
I couldnt swallow that. With tears in my eyes, I grabbed his suitcase and threw it out the door. He chased after me, shouting:
Darling, youll regret this. The flat is in my name, so you and the kids will have to move to a rundown council house on the outskirts. Dont even think about maintenancemy official pay is barely enough. Figure out how youll survive.
I couldnt believe those words were coming from the man I loved. I knew then I didnt want my children growing up under his roof. Adam walked off with Poppy, and I hauled my stuff and the kids into the flat we owned together.
There was no time for sobbing. Adam filed for divorce within days. I spent my last few pounds on a solid solicitor, who made sure the flat went to me and the children. I didnt even ask for any maintenance payments.
Seven years on, I remarried. My new husband, James, is nothing like Adamhes kind, steady, and makes me laugh. Turns out Poppy was only after Adams money, and when he was left homeless, she kicked him out. He tried to crawl back to me, but after everything hed said, I wasnt interested in giving him another chance.
