They say that with age, you become invisible
That you no longer matter. That you get in the way.
They say it with such coldness, it stings
as if fading into the background is part and parcel of growing old,
as if Im supposed to learn my place in the corner,
to become just another piece of furniture
silent, motionless, out of sight and out of mind.
But I was never born for the corners.
I wont beg permission to breathe or take up space.
I wont hush my voice for the sake of someones comfort.
I wasnt put on this earth to become just a shade of myself
nor to make myself small so others can feel at ease.
No, gentlemen.
At this agewhen so many wait for me to wither away
I choose instead to burn brightly.
I do not apologise for my wrinkles.
I wear them with pride.
Each one is a signature from life
proof that Ive loved, Ive laughed, Ive wept, Ive endured.
I refuse to stop being a woman
simply because I no longer fit the filters,
or because my bones cant handle high heels.
I remain desire.
I remain creativity.
I remain freedom.
And if that ruffles feathers
so much the better.
I am not ashamed of my silver hair.
Id only be ashamed if I hadnt lived long enough to earn it.
I do not fade.
I do not surrender.
And I do not leave the stage.
I still dream.
I still laugh out loud.
I still dancehowever I can manage.
I still shout up at the skies, yearning to be heard.
I am not a memory.
I am living presence.
I am a slow-burning flame.
I am a soul alive.
A woman with scars
who no longer needs emotional crutches.
A woman who doesnt wait for anothers approval to know she is strong.
So dont call me poor thing.
Dont dismiss me because my years show.
Call me courageous.
Call me strength.
Call me by my name
say it straight, with raised glass and steady voice.
My name is Edith.
And let it be known:
I am still here
upright, with a spirit still ablaze.
