“I Don’t Want to Be a Mum! I Just Want to Leave Home!” – My Daughter Told Me My daughter became pregnant at 15 and hid it from us for months. We only found out when she was five months along and, of course, abortion wasn’t an option for us. We never learned who the baby’s father was; she only saw him for a few months and wasn’t even sure of his age—maybe 17, 18, or even 19. My husband and I were shocked and knew these times would be incredibly hard for us all, especially as our daughter insisted she wanted to be a mum but had no real idea what that meant. Four months later, she gave birth to a healthy, strong boy, although her labour was very difficult and her recovery took another four months. I had to leave my job to care for both my daughter and my grandson, as she wouldn’t, or couldn’t, manage on her own. When she finally regained her strength, she showed no interest in the baby—I was the one looking after him by day and night, asking and pleading for her help, sometimes shouting in frustration. One day she blurted: “I see how much you love him. Just adopt him then! I’ll be his sister. I don’t want to be a mum—I want to go out with friends and have fun. I want to party!” At first, I thought she was suffering from postnatal depression, but it turns out she simply didn’t love her child. My husband and I decided to take legal custody of our grandson. Meanwhile, our daughter became completely unmanageable, not listening to us at all, staying out at night, and taking no interest in her son. This went on for years and we thought nothing would ever change. Our grandson grew into a lovely, clever little boy. And then, suddenly, everything shifted. He got taller, learned to walk and talk, and was always cheerful. He would rush to my daughter whenever she came home, hugging her and telling her about his day. Somehow, her heart melted. She became an amazing mum, spending all her free time with him, showering him with affection, telling us all the time, “I’m so lucky to have my son—he’s the most precious thing in my life! I’ll never give him up!” My husband and I are overjoyed that peace and happiness have finally returned to our family.

I dont want to be a mum! I want to leave home! my daughter told me one evening.

My daughter fell pregnant when she was just 15. She kept it hidden from us for a long time. My husband and I only found out when she was already five months along. Of course, abortion was never an option for us.

We never did learn who the father was. My daughter only said that she had seen him for about three months, and then they broke up. She didnt even really know how old he was.

Maybe he was 17, maybe 18, perhaps 19! she’d answer vaguely.

Naturally, my husband and I were absolutely shaken by the news that our young daughter was pregnant. We both knew this would be an enormous challenge for all of us. On top of that, our daughter kept insisting she wanted to have the baby, that she wanted to be a mother. I knew she really didnt understand what being a mother meant.

Four months later, she gave birth to a wonderful baby boy: healthy and strong. The birth itself was extremely difficult, and she spent four months recovering. Theres no way she would have managed without my help, so I left my job to look after her and my grandson.

But once she regained her strength, she didnt want anything to do with the baby. She slept through the nights, barely lifted a finger to care for him during the day. I did everything I possibly could talking, asking, explaining, even shouting at her for not helping me. Then, she said those words:

I can see you love him. Why dont you adopt him? Ill just be his sister. I dont want to be a mum! I want to go out with friends, dance at clubs, have fun!

At first, I thought perhaps she had postnatal depression. But the truth was simpler and sadder she just didnt love her child, not at all.

Eventually, my husband and I realised we had to step in properly, so we took legal responsibility for our grandson. My daughter became utterly unpredictable. She refused to listen to us, went out at night and came back in the early morning. She never cared one bit about her son.

Thats how we lived for several years. We honestly thought nothing would ever change. Meanwhile, our grandson was growing and thriving. In just two years, he blossomed: he was taller, walking and talking, cheerful and always smiling.

Hes so happy when my daughter comes home: he runs to her, hugs her, and tells her all sorts of things. Gradually, my daughters heart softened at last, she became a wonderful mother. Now, she spends all her free time with her little boy, constantly hugging and kissing him. She often says:

Im so lucky to have my son! Hes the most precious thing in my life. I wouldnt give him up for anything!

My husband and I are simply overjoyed that, at last, there is peace and happiness in our family.
