I found out my son had abandoned a pregnant woman, and I paid for her solicitor.
The day I learnt what my son had done, it felt as if the ground had fallen away beneath my feet. It wasn’t shame I feltit was sorrow for that poor girl I’d once seen zipping around town on her scooter, delivering orders under a scorching sky, exhaustion etched across her face and a bump already beginning to show. That’s when I knew I had to step in.
I knocked on her door on a Tuesday afternoon. She answered in her work uniform, her pregnancy now unmistakable, her face worn with fatigue that tugged at my heart.
Yes? she said, her voice wary.
Im the mother of the man who left you, I said straight to the point. Im here to set things right.
Her eyes brimmed with tears.
Please, madam, I dont want trouble
Im not here to cause trouble, love,” I replied. “Im here with solutions. Do you know the best family solicitor in town? Ive already paid their fee. You have an appointment tomorrow.
She was speechless. I continued, That boy may have come from my womb, but he clearly wasnt raised with my values. Hell pay maintenance for this child, even if he has to take on three jobs to do so.
And so it went. The solicitor handled everything brilliantly. When my granddaughter was bornbecause she is my granddaughter, whether or not my son admits itI showed up at the hospital with nappies, baby clothes, and a flat-packed cot in the car.
Theres no need, honestly
There is, I said, cutting her off. Im the grandmother.
My son, of course, stopped speaking to me. He called me a traitor, accused me of interfering, of ruining his life. I told him he was the one who had done the damageI was merely picking up the pieces.
Two years have passed. The young woman and my granddaughter now live with me. She studies nursing in the evenings while I look after the little one, and were the oddest but closest family in our street. My son still hasnt spoken to me, but he pays his support every monththe solicitor made sure of that.
Yesterday, while I was feeding the baby, she hugged me from behind.
Thank you, Mum, she whispered.
Mum.
And I wonder, could there ever be a greater gift than gaining a daughter and granddaughter, even if it means losing a son for a while? Sometimes family isnt the one youre born into, but the one you choose to stand up for.
A story about responsibility, conscience, and unexpected love.
