After I Told My Wife That Her Daughter Wasn’t My Responsibility, the Truth About Our Family Was Revealed

After I told my wife that her daughter wasnt my concern, the truth about our family slipped out like a cat through a cracked door.

Nigel had always been a bachelor; even his younger brother had a wife and children tucked away in a neatly manicured garden in Surrey. Nigel, meanwhile, couldnt find the right English rose for a spouse. Every family gathering it was the same: his aunt murmured about wedding bells, his cousins joked about catching the bouquet, even his mum checked her calendar hopefully. Nigel was ready, though. By the time hed turned 34, he’d had enough of solitary evenings eating fish pie for one.

One midnight, swirling through a haze of strobing lights in a Soho nightclub, he spotted his colleague out with a woman. The trio fell into casual, slightly tipsy conversation.

Fancy seeing you here, mate. Whats the occasion?
Evening, Nigel. My friends visitingthought Id show her the sights.
Introduce us, then.
Of course. This is Alice.
Welcome to London, Alice. Im Nigel.
Lovely to meet new faces. Lets be mates.
May I count you as a friend, then?
Definitely.

Alice had a gentle smile, and the kind of modest grace Nigel had only ever seen in dreams or Jane Austen novels. She was worldly, yet unassuming, and instantly he felt bewitched, as if caught in a strange English fog. They talked for hours, and only then did Nigel learn Alice had a daughter, a schoolgirl. Initially, the thought unsettled him; later, when he pondered it under the yellow glow of the streetlamps, it seemed harmless, even oddly comforting.

They moved in together. Alices daughter came and wentschool, piano lessons, after-school clubs. During the holidays, shed vanish to visit her grandmother in Devon, leaving the house humming with quiet.

Alice didnt see much point in working; Nigels position as an actuary meant he kept the household flush with pounds sterling. Gradually, though, Nigel noticed Alices expectations blossoming like wildflowersshe wanted more than organic veg and laundry money. She asked for funds for private tutors and drama classes.

Nigel, I need some extra cash for activities, shed say. Could you spare a bit more this time?
Of course. I want her to have every opportunity.

But their life together became a carousel of increasing expensesfees rising like the tide. It was only a matter of time before Nigels patience ran dry. One day, he confronted Alice in a voice that sounded oddly distant, like the echo at the bottom of a deep well.

Alice, yesterday Miss Wren called. There’s a school trip.
And?
I want my daughter to go. But its expensive, Nigel. Everyone else agreed to pay. They’re waiting for our answer.

Alice, Im tired of these endless costs for every club and outing. Why doesnt her own father contribute?
You knew I had a daughter. You accepted her. If youre going to be miserly, why did you marry me? Im disappointed!

At this, Alice dissolved into tears and hid herself away in the spare room. Nigel mulled it over, guilt swimming round his head like goldfish. He handed over the money she requested, but the bitterness lingered, sticky and hard to swallow. Why wouldnt Alices ex get involved? Why did he float through life oblivious, ducking all responsibility? Nigel needed answers, so he pressed the issue again.

Alice, dont be angry. I dont want a row. But why doesnt your ex-husband contribute anything for your daughter?
I refuse his money. I dont want it.

But its backwards, isnt it? A stranger is expected to support another mans child while her father strolls off, unconcerned. It isnt fair.
Stranger? I thought she was family to you. I must have been daft to think you really cared.

Dont blame me, Alice. I could point fingers as well.
Thats your right. But I wont ask him for anything. If you dont want to help, fineIll earn it myself. But were not going to grovel. Had enough responsibility? Then maybe we should just part ways.
Why get so worked up? Lets talk it through and decide together.

I dont want decisions. Im going to bed. Sleep on the sofa if you likeIm not up for chatting.

So Nigel curled up on the lumpy settee, haunted by thoughts of pride and family. He realised Alice was too proud, and he was at odds with her daughter. With each birthday and GCSE result, the problemsand the costswould only grow. Alices ex lived freely, entirely unconcerned. One afternoon, Nigel stumbled upon a photo on Alices laptop: her ex-husband posed by a sleek car, dressed in tailored suits. He looked wealthy enough to pay for ballet lessons and expensive field trips, if only he were asked. But Alices stubborn pride locked the door to him.

Finally, Nigel made up his mind to seek out the mysterious father himself. The air shimmered as if the truth were hiding just behind the curtains or the ticking of the old clock, waiting to be revealed.
