I dont understand why I became his wife.
Recently, we got married. I truly believed my husband was utterly in love with me. There wouldnt have been any doubt in my mind, save for one incidentnot betrayal, but something much stranger and more serious.
Looking back, I think it happened because I cared too much. I adored him, forgave him everything, and gave him unconditional love. He grew used to my unwavering devotion. It made him more self-assured, perhaps convinced that with a mere snap of his fingers, anyone would bend over backwards for him, even though he wasnt particularly sought after by others. Another woman would never have tolerated his faults or trusted him so blindly.
Shortly before our wedding, he said he needed some time alonewanted a holiday just for himself to prepare for married life. There was nothing I could do, so I accepted it and let him go on the trip.
Later, he told me hed escaped civilisation, choosing a place with no internet and no phone. He went alone to the Lake District, wanting to take in the beauty of nature. I stayed behind, missing him terribly. Every minute felt endless as I waited for him, my heart aching with longing.
A week later, he returned. It was the happiest day of my life. I greeted him with all the warmth and affection I could muster. I even cooked his favourite English meal.
The next day, something odd began to happen. He kept running off into the hallway or the spare room. Then, he started leaving the house several times a day, always with a different excuse. One afternoon, while heading out for groceries, I checked the post and found a letter. It looked ordinary. It was addressed to me, sent by him while he was away. What it said shook me deeply:
Hello. I dont want to mislead you anymore. Youre not the right person for me. I dont want to spend the rest of my life with you. There will be no wedding. Im sorry, please dont look for me or phone me. I wont return to you.
So brief, so blunt, yet so devastating.
Only then did I realise that all those moments he dashed about, he was checking the postbox. Quietly, I destroyed the letter. I said nothing, never letting on that I knew. But how could I live with someone who so clearly didnt want to be with me? Why did he marry me at all, pretending everything was alright?
Sometimes, life teaches us tough lessons: No matter how deeply you love someone, you cannot make them love you in return. True happiness comes not from trying to hold onto someone who wishes to leave, but from learning to value and respect yourself.
