Im 45 years old, and Ive stopped having guests round to my house.
Some people seem to forget their manners the moment they set foot in someone elses home. They become impolite, start giving unsolicited advice, and linger for hours without the slightest thought of heading home.
I used to be quite hospitable, but my attitude changed fairly quickly. Once I was past forty, I completely gave up inviting people over. Why bother? Dealing with guests like that is just too much hassle.
My last birthday, I chose to celebrate at a nice pub. I really enjoyed itso much, in fact, that Ive decided thats the way Ill do it from now on. Let me explain why.
Hosting a gathering at home is expensive. Even a simple dinner sets you back a fair amount. If youre throwing a Christmas do, the costs only go up. Most guests these days show up with a modest gift, as everyones feeling the pinch. Then they end up staying late into the night. All I want afterwards is a bit of peacenot to be stuck washing up a mountain of plates and putting everything back in order.
I dont wait for anyone within the four walls of my flat anymore. I clean and cook whenever I please. I remember feeling tired and miserable after all those festive get-togethers at my place. These days, I simply enjoy the quieter moments after a holidayI can have a nice soak and head to bed early.
I have plenty of spare time now, and I make sure to spend it wisely. Friends are still welcome to pop in for a cuppa, but I dont stress if there arent any homemade cakes or biscuits on offer. I speak my mind honestly now. If I want a bit of rest, Ill politely show people to the door. It might not seem the warmest, but I dont mind anymore. My comfort comes first.
What never ceases to amaze me is how those who just love being guests rarely ever return the favour. Theyd much rather enjoy themselves in someone elses home, avoiding all the fuss of tidying and cooking themselves.
Are you the sort to host people at yours? Would you call yourself welcoming?
