My father-in-law was utterly speechless when he saw the conditions we used to live in.
I first met my husband at the wedding of a mutual friend, after I had just moved to London and secured work there. If Im honest, I was overjoyed to finally have left my small rural village behind. Our relationship blossomed swiftlya year later, our daughter was born.
But then, everything changed.
Why is our daughter blonde with blue eyes, when you and I are both dark-haired and olive-skinned? my husband asked one evening.
Dearest, perhaps she takes after your father. Just look at their resemblance, I replied.
Dont be ridiculous. Children ought to look like their parents, not distant relatives. Even my mother believes she isnt mine, he grumbled.
From the beginning, my mother-in-law had always disapproved of me. She insisted I didnt truly love her son. My father-in-law, on the other hand, was a truly good mandivorced from her, but never neglectful of his son, even with another family of his own.
Eventually, my husband brought another woman into our home. Without warning, he told me to quickly pack my belongings and leave. I had no choice.
I was at a loss for where to go. My own parents would never have accepted me back with a childit would have been a disgrace, and their old house was far too cold and lacked proper heating. I phoned my friend Eleanor, who let me stay with her for a few days. Soon, I managed to find a small room to rent and moved in with my daughter. Money, however, quickly started to run short.
One afternoon, I walked into a greengrocers only to hear someone calling my name.
Ladies, where have you been? I even drove out to the countryside searching for you, my father-in-law exclaimed.
How are you? Its lovely to see you, I whispered, feeling comforted.
I know what my son has done, and theres no excuse for it. He and my ex-wife are alike in many ways. Where are you living now?
Were renting a room, I admitted.
Alright. Im in a bit of a rushI have to travel on business. But as soon as I return, well sort out the housing problem. Here, take thisit should last about two weeks, he said, handing me an envelope.
Relief flooded over meI could at least afford food and milk for my daughter.
My father-in-law returned earlier than expected and came to visit us. He was shocked when he saw how we were living. While he couldnt take us in himselfhis new wife forbade ithe found another solution. Using all his savings, he bought a small flat and put it in our daughters name. I tried to refuse such a generous gift, but he was adamant. It wasnt for me, he said, but for his granddaughter.
Within a month, my daughter and I made our little nest feel like home. My father-in-law even brought us furniture and the essentials.
Dont rush to put your daughter in nurseryshe needs her mother for now. Ill help you, dont worry. And my wife has reconsidered; she wants to meet her granddaughter, he told me.
Thank you so much! I replied, my eyes brimming.
Dont cry, dear. You can always come to me for helpIll never turn you away. In time, everything will settle down, youll see.
Im grateful my daughter has such a wonderful grandfather, even though she wasnt so lucky with her father. He gave up everything to help us through our troubles.
Years have passed. I remarried and built a new life, but I have never forgotten my father-in-law. He is always a welcome guest in our home, and we visit him regularly. Now, all is well.
