Three Years Ago I Divorced My Husband – Our Only Connection Was Our Five-Year-Old Son. I Wasn’t Surp…

Three years ago, I got divorced from my husband. Honestly, we had nothing in common except our son. So I wasnt even surprised when, a month after the divorce, my ex found himself a younger, shinier girlfriend. And, well, three months ago they actually tied the knot.
If were being upfront, I stopped caring long ago. But yesterday, I got a message from the new wife that left me scratching my head in pure British confusion. She informed me, rather boldly, that we ought to leave James alone and stop asking him for money, because apparently, you wont be getting a penny from him now. Charming.
My son is five years old. Id been on maternity leave for some time, so James covered all the expenses. Now Im working part time and forever squinting at job adverts for something full time.
After the split, we agreed to sell our three-bedroom flat in Birmingham and swap it for two smaller places: one for James, the other for myself and our son.
James pays pretty decent child support, to be fair. Still, Im determined to cover my own expenses, so youll find me flitting from one interview to another, hunting down that elusive full-time gig. Every quid James sends goes straight to our little ladpaying for nursery, hobby groups, toys, and food. All I really take is a bit to keep the lights and heating on.
Then theres judo. My son fancies himself as the next karate kid, so theres added cost to keep him in action.
This summer, James sent some extra cashon the strict condition we head off on holiday. So we packed our bags for the Lake District, and my son practically skipped all the way there, he was so thrilled.
I like that, post-divorce or not, James hasnt forgotten his son exists. Even if I had urgent things to do, he was always happy to take our boy off my hands for a bit. Hardly a hardshipshopping centres, countryside walks, cinema trips. Oddly, though, my sons never set foot in his dads new house.
I suspect the reason is the new Mrs James. I didnt lose any sleep over ituntil that delightful message from her landed.
Recently, she plucked up the courage to call me. Claimed I had no conscience because James spends the bulk of his salary on us. Well, I didnt keep quiet. I told James everything straight away. He was livid. Apparently, he told her flatly to keep her nose out of his affairs, and not to boss about his bank account.
Still, I worry shell manage to talk James into cutting back on what he spends for our son. Then Id have to say no to so many things my boy loves.
All I can do is hope James still has that spark of decency and kindness I first fell for, back when life was just a bit less complicated.
