I travelled to another country just to see my ex-fiancé three months after he broke up with me. It probably sounds mad, and honestly, it was. At the time, I didnt think with my headI let my heart lead everything. I packed the engagement ring in my suitcase, clung to all our old pictures on my phone, and held onto one foolish hope: that seeing me in person might make him regret his decision.
I knew exactly where he worked. He was a doctor at a hospital. I arrived alone, clutching a small suitcase with my stomach twisted in knots. I sat in the hospital lobby, pretending to wait to ask about a patient. When I spotted him striding down the corridor in his white coat, tired and hurried, I felt like Id forgotten how to breathe. He looked just the samealways rushing, always a bit weary.
I went up to him and said we needed to talk. He looked stunned for a moment, and then we walked down the corridor together. I tried my best to sound strong. I told him that Id come all this way because I didnt want our story to end like this, that I still loved him, and wanted to at least try to fix things between us.
He didnt waver. He told me hed made up his mind, that work was his priority now, and that I should move on with my life. He didnt raise his voice, but his words were coldunbelievably cold.
I bit my lip so I wouldnt embarrass myself by crying in front of him. I nodded, pulled the engagement ring out of my purse, handed it back and quickly said goodbye. I walked outside and collapsed onto a concrete bench in front of the hospital, unable to hold it together any longer. I covered my face and sobbed harder than I had in monthsfor the trip, for the shattered hope, for the rejection, for loving someone who didnt love me back.
I hadnt noticed there was another doctor sitting on a nearby bench, on his break. He must have heard me crying for a while. When I started to calm down, he got up and quietly approached.
Sorry to interrupt, he said, but if you need anything, Im right here. Are you alright?
I shook my head and managed, No My hearts been broken twice by the same man.
He looked at me with real concern and asked if he could sit beside me. He did, and we ended up having the strangest, most unexpectedly sincere conversation. He offered me a bottle of water, asked if I knew anyone else in the city, if I was alone. So I told him everythinghow Id travelled just to see my ex, how hed been my fiancé, how we were planning a wedding until three months ago, and that I couldnt seem to let go.
He didnt judge me at all. He just listened. He had a calm way of speaking. He said I shouldnt have to beg for someones love, that its normal to feel shattered today, but I couldnt let it become my whole life. There was no hint of flirting in his tonehe genuinely just wanted to help a stranger who happened to be in tears outside a hospital.
So, we started chatting. Then, we started texting. I told him I didnt plan on staying long in this country, that I was desperate to leave as soon as I could. He asked when my flight home was. I admitted, awkwardly, that I hadnt even booked a ticketId been clinging to the hope of reconciliation. He told me:
At least stay a few days. Come out with me and my mates. Dont shut yourself away in your hotel and cry.
I agreed. We went for meals, wandered around the city, and I met some of his friends from the hospital. I was still stuck in heartbroken mode. Nothing happened between us. No kisses, no flirtingjust long talks and gentle smiles that gave me tiny moments of relief from all the hurt.
A week later, I flew back to England. I thought things would just fade away and end there. But we kept talking. Every single day, for six monthslong messages, late-night phone calls, little voice notes about ordinary life. Without realising it, we grew closer and closer.
Then one day, completely out of the blue, he turned up in my hometown. He messaged me:
Im here. I need to see you.
He was waiting at the airport. When I arrived and saw him with his suitcase, I barely knew what was happening. He hugged me and said, straight out:
Im in love with you. I dont want our conversations to just be through screens. I came so I could see you face to face and know if you feel the same.
I criedtears of fear, excitement, nerves all at once. I said yesthat Id fallen in love with him, without even knowing it. And from that day, our relationship officially began.
Today marks three years since we got together. Were engaged. We got married in August. Were already sending out wedding invitations. Sometimes I wonder, if I hadnt travelled to another country in search of a man who rejected me, Id never have met the man who is now my husband.
And although it all began with a heartbroken sob on a bench outside a hospital, its turned into the most unexpected love story of my life.
