My mother-in-law is on a one-woman mission to wreck my marriage. Sad part is, my husband doesnt believe a word I say.
When I first got married, I was positively glowing with happiness. My husband was thoughtful, polite, helpful with everythingbasically the knight in shining armour from those old fairy tales. The only storm cloud in my blue sky? His mother. When I met her, it was painfully clear that she was… well, lets just say she definitely wouldn’t win Mastermind.
A fan of home comforts and, more importantly, wildly controlling, I realised that if we ever lived with her, Id be gasping for air within a week. We quickly decided to rent a little flat just for ourselves.
Then everything took a turnmy dad died after a long battle with cancer and suddenly, I was the proud, slightly overwhelmed owner of a big country house. My husband and I agreed to move there; Id always dreamed of a garden and found the countryside rather romantic. Turns out, he did too.
A little while after our big move, who should rock up at the door but my mother-in-law. She breezed in, declaring that actually, she fancied the house for herself. She had the cheek to offer us a one-bed flat in town in exchange for our lovely home! Naturally, I said no. She caused such a scene, youd have thought shed been thrown out onto the street, then stormed out in a huff.
To top it off, my husband called me later on, saying Id treated his mother terribly, apparently yelled at her and made her feel most unwelcome. Turns out, shed spun him some ludicrous tale. Now Im rather stuck, not knowing what to say or do to get him to believe me.
Honestly, what is one supposed to do when your mother-in-law is auditioning for the part of villain in your own life story?
