A week before Mothers Day, I could hardly make it out of the courtroom. Tears blurred my vision. The only words echoing through my mind were, You are no longer husband and wife. Why did he do this to me? What did I do to deserve such a punishment?
I married when I was only eighteen. Our love was intense and full of passionsleepless nights, a feeling as though I was floating above the world. We spent five wonderful years together, during which my heart overflowed with affection for him. I looked after him in every way imaginable: bringing him breakfast in bed each morning, preparing his favourite mealsonly what he likedand making sure our home was always spotless.
His parents, however, never truly accepted me. They constantly said I was not good enough for their son and hinted they would find someone better suited for him. Their words clearly affected my husband. Little by little, I noticed him growing more distant and critical.
Our son was five at the time. At first, my husband adored and doted on him, but gradually his attitude shifted and he became colder. I suspect his parents started filling his head with doubts, convincing him our son wasnt really his (though the likeness was unmistakable). My husband began visiting his family more often, nearly living with them. Whenever he returned home, he was always irritable and raised his voice at me. In spite of it all, I did my best to hold things together, taking care of myself and our home.
One day, his anger boiled over and, in a moment of fury, he struck me. I couldnt believe it was real, yet I still clung to the hope things would get better. Not long after, he told me hed had enough and was leaving. He walked out on both me and our son. I pleaded with him to reconsider, to think of our family, but his mind was made up.
Even after the divorce, I couldnt imagine my life without him. He still pays a paltry amount of child support and insists on seeing every receipt before handing over a penny. Even if I buy just a loaf of bread, I have to scan the receipt and send it on to him. I am forced to beg for money from the man who cant bring himself to provide for his own child.
He rarely visits our son, and on the rare occasions he does, its only for a day or two away. Our child senses the emotional chill and is reluctant to see him. My ex-husband thinks Im turning our son against him, but the truth is, Im still heartbroken over our split and cry every single day. Since the separation, my health has suffered, Ive lost weight, and depression has taken hold. I snap at my boy, though I know hes innocent in all of this.
How can you carry on with life when your heart feels so shattered? Each day, I find myself on my ex-husbands social media, keeping tabs on his life. Thats how I found out hes getting married again, which only deepened my sorrow.
I understand now why he no longer visits, and why our son isnt interested. My head knows its over, but my heart simply cant accept it. How do I move on?
Over time, though, Ive come to see that clinging to the past only prolongs my pain. The greatest lesson Ive learned is that you must eventually let go of whats gone and look after yourself and those who truly love you. Only then can you start to heal and rebuild a brighter tomorrow.
