We Love Our Grandchildren, but We Simply Don’t Have the Strength to Keep Supporting Them They say c…

Our grandchildren are dear to us, but we simply can’t keep up with the work they bring.

They say children are a blessing, and I suppose that’s true when it comes to grandchildren too. I do agree with thatjust as long as you havent got too many and youre able to actually support them. My husband and I have a daughter, Emily. When she was just nineteen, she sat us down and told us she was pregnant. Not long after, she gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, and married her boyfriend. At the time, I thought things might fall into place.

Of course, our world turned upside down. A young mother with two babies to care for, and her husband barely past his teens himself, earning next to nothing. It was up to my husband and me to keep everyone afloat. We had to take up extra shifts at work just to make ends meet for our daughter and grandchildren. There were days we barely caught a breath, out the door at sunrise and stumbling in at dusk.

The young couple lived with us for a while. Mornings meant early starts for workand Id be utterly exhausted, having spent the night looking after the twins so Emily could get some rest. Its no surprise I soon felt my own strength diminishing.

Three years slipped by like this. Eventually, they managed to get a place of their own and the children were growing up, and just as we breathed a sigh of relief, Emily announced she was pregnant again. I told her quite bluntly that perhaps she should reconsiderraising two is hard enough, after all. But she insisted she wanted to keep the baby. She gave birth, and we found ourselves right back in the thick of it: another little mouth to feed, another stretch of our already thin finances. My husband and I threw ourselves into more work, despite my son-in-law now earning a bit more. But honestly, how can a young man provide properly for five people?

Then everything really started to unravel. My husband suffered a stroke, and I found myself with awful chest pains. It was painfully clear: our bodies simply couldn’t manage this burden any longer. I told Emily that she and her husband needed to sort things out themselves now. And then she delivered the final blowshe was expecting a fourth child.

I was speechless. What on earth were they thinking? Did they just expect us to pick up the pieces for them forever? We just cant anymore. I dont know what to do. I dont want people looking at us and thinking weve abandoned our only daughter. We did everything we possibly could for her and our grandchildren. But now well, it just isnt possible anymore.
