There Were Women’s Clothes Scattered on the Floor, and When I Walked Into the Bedroom, I Discovered …

There were womens clothes strewn across the floor and when I walked into the bedroom, there he waswrapped around another woman…

England

James and I had been together for over three yearsan absolutely textbook romance, really. Wed already survived the terror of meeting each others parents, and were deep in the throes of planning a wedding. Life was going marvellously, and I genuinely believed I wanted to have kids with this man and quietly grow ancient and eccentric together.

On the day he was due back from a business trip, we didnt have any plans, but I fancied surprising him. I skived off work, baked his favourite Victoria sponge, and drove over to his flat. Luckily, I had my own set of keys, so while he was (presumably) snoring away, I busied myself in the kitchen making coffee to go with his cake.

I tiptoed to the bedroom door, and before I could even cross the threshold, nearly broke my neck tripping over something lacy on the carpet. The room was pitch black, so I used my mobile to shine a light on the scenelo and behold, a sizeable pile of womens clothes on the floor. As I crept further inside, I caught sight of him, spooning another woman as if auditioning for a romance drama.

I didnt erupt into a Shakespearean tragedy. Instead, I quietly closed the door, set down his favourite cake (with only a little dramatic flourish), left my keys, and snuck out. It was absolutely freezing outside, and the last thing I wanted was to slink back to my mum and dads house. So, naturally, I landed myself on a park bench for a good, cathartic cry.

After a while, a bloke wandered by and plopped himself down next to me, asking if I was all right. I didnt mention the domestic betrayal, but conversation flowedlike British rain in November. One thing led to another, and somehow, we ended up at his place, sharing a pot of tea, as you do.

Now we live together and are planning our own wedding! I suppose fate does odd thingssometimes shes just got a wicked sense of humour. But honestly, dont all the best stories start with a bit of drama and a slice of cake?
