I Lost the Desire to Help My Mother-in-Law When I Discovered What She Had Done—But I Can’t Bring Mys…

I’ve lost the urge to help my mother-in-law after discovering what shed done. Yet, I cant just abandon her.

I’ve two children, each with a different father. My eldest is my daughter, Abigail. Shes sixteen now. Abigails father takes care of her, pays maintenance, and is in her life. Even though my ex-husband is remarried with two more children, he never forgets about Abigail.

But my son hasnt been as lucky. Two years ago, my second husband fell ill and died in the hospital only three days later. It honestly still feels unreal; I keep half expecting to hear the latch, see him walk in, grin at me, wish me a good morning. At times, its these small hopes that break me, and I find myself crying all day.

During all this, I leaned a great deal on my late husbands mother, Margaret. It was just as hard for her, if not worseafter all, he was her only son. We stuck together through thick and thin, supported one another, and somehow survived that nightmare of a time. We called and visited often, always speaking longingly of him.

There was even a moment when we considered moving in together, but Margaret changed her mind, and the years slipped byseven already. We always got on brilliantly, like proper friends more than in-laws.

Ill never forget, when I was pregnant with my son, how Margaret casually brought up a paternity test. I still dont know why. Shed seen some programme on the tellyabout a man raising a child, only to find out years later he wasnt the real father.

I told her straight, Thats nonsense. If a man ever doubted his own child, hed never be a father in any true sense. Hed just be a Sunday Dad.

Margaret insisted she knew I was carrying her sons child. I was certain as well. Honestly, I thought that when the baby arrived shed want proof, but nothing more was said.

This summer, Margaret fell seriously ill and her health took a bad turn. I decided it would be best for us to be closerlooked up estate agents, and we planned to get her a flat nearby.

When Margaret ended up in hospital, we needed her late son’s death certificate for the agent. She couldnt manage to look, so I went round to her flat and started sifting through her paperwork.

Whilst searching for the certificate, I stumbled across something elsea paternity test. Turns out, when my son was only two months old, Margaret had done a test to prove who his father was.

I was furious. After all these years, I realised Margaret had never truly trusted me! I confronted her, told her everything I’d bottled up. She apologised and swore it had been a foolish mistake, but I still cant shake the sense of betrayal. That she kept this from me for years cuts deep.

Now I find myself tornI don’t want to help her anymore, not in my heart. Still, I’m painfully aware shes got absolutely no one else.

I could never deprive my son of his grandmother, so Ill still be there for Margaret, but that warmth, that trust we once shared, thats gone now. I doubt itll ever come back.
