Im glad I chose not to have children. Now, at seventy, I truly have no regrets.
I recall sitting in the waiting area of a clinic many years ago, awaiting my appointment with a dermatologist. A woman sat beside me, and we struck up a conversation, as people sometimes do when time needs passing. She was remarkably pleasant, and our exchange left a lasting impression on me, changing my perspective on many things.
What first caught my attention was her neat and stylish appearance; she seemed no older than fifty and carried herself with a quiet confidence. During our chat, she revealed she was already past seventy. I wouldnt have guessed it she looked better than most her age and possessed a spirited energy. She seemed set apart from her contemporaries.
She told me her name was Grace, and from our conversation, I gathered that she had married twice but was now living alone. Her first marriage ended when she was still quite young. She had always been clear that she didnt wish to have children. Her husband knew how she felt about living child-free, but as she reached thirty, he began to suggest that a proper family wasnt complete without little ones. Grace, however, never felt her mind change, even as the years went by.
Rather than surrendering to pressure and bringing a child into the world unwillingly, she chose a different path. She and her first husband had an honest discussion and agreed to part ways.
Later, she married again, this time to a man named Harold. He was already divorced and had a child from his earlier marriage, and, it seemed, he wanted no more children. Their life together was peaceful, and the question of having children never came between them in fact, he was grateful that she shared his views. Unfortunately, their time together was cut short when Harold died in a car accident.
Grace confided she did not find loneliness burdensome. On the contrary, she was content with her independence and relished not having to accommodate anyone elses needs or wishes. She was certain she would never rue her decision. Many of her friends, who once imagined their children would care for them in old age, now sighed with disappointment. Their children had grown up, building lives of their own, with little time or inclination for aged parents. That was precisely why Grace never regretted her choice to be childless, and she never wavered in her conviction.
These days, Grace lives a rich, fulfilling life and savours every moment. Far from bringing her sorrow, the absence of children is, in her own words, an ongoing comfort.
A glass of water? she once said, with a wry smile, referencing the old saying about children handing you a glass of water in your twilight years. I wont be left starving or unwell. While my friends were pouring their savings into their children, I was able to set some aside. Now, I have more than enough in pounds and pence to ensure I can pay for the best care for the rest of my days.
And so, she asked, what do you think of such a life? Do you agree with this outlook?
