Everything changed in a split second. That day, we were celebrating a family occasionmy husband, our daughter and I were marking his fathers birthday. It was a small, cosy gathering. My father-in-law was in great spirits, cracking jokes and reminiscing about the silly things he got up to as a boy and young man. After lunch, my daughter and I offered to walk him home, since my husband cant manage long walks these days with his bad leg. Plus, hed had quite a few drinks. I just knew that when we got back, hed already be fast asleep. And, true as ever, we returned to find him slumped at the table, dozing in front of his open laptop.
My daughter slipped off to her room, and I thought Id make myself a cup of tea. I was heading toward the kitchen when something on the computer screen caught my eye. Hed left himself logged in to Facebook. Seems hed meant to delete a message but hadnt managed it. Curiosity got the better of me, so I took a closer look at what hed been messaging about. The moment I saw, I love you, my world spun. Hed written it to an old friend of his. My legs nearly gave way, and I collapsed onto the sofa.
My fathers warnings immediately echoed in my mind. Dad had always been against our marriage, certain Id be the one to suffer. For nearly twenty-eight years, Id tried to prove him wrong. My husband and I had been through so much together. I looked after him when he was ill; I was there for him during that rough period when he was forced into early retirement. Work had been his life, so losing it was a real blow, but we got through it. He even landed another job in the end. Hed often tell me how grateful he was for my support and love, for all Id done for him. Turns out, hed just been lying after all. I managed to pull myself together and got up, unsure what to do. Instinctively, I went to our daughter. She had her nose in a book, but the minute she saw my face she asked what was wrong. I hadnt even realised I was crying. I told her everything.
She dashed out, straight to her dad. Honestly, it frightened me. She deleted the messages but made sure to take a photo of the whole conversation first. Reading those love notes between my husband and another woman was unbearable. Their relationship had lasted only about a monthprobably started when he changed jobs. My mind was completely tangled.
Meanwhile, my daughter decided to send a message to the woman, something along the lines of: If you love him so much, then by all means, have him. Another screenshot taken. The woman instantly logged off when she got the message. My daughter then sent the screenshots to her dad too, along with a message telling him it was time to be a man and move out. She came over to me, wrapped me tightly in a hug, and kept repeating that I was strong, that wed get through it, and shed always be by my side.
All that was left was to wait for my husband to wake up. I had no idea how hed react. Then, before we knew it, his phone started ringing; of course, it was her. To my surprise, he answeredobviously he thought we werent home yet. The conversation lasted less than a minute. I heard him moving about, getting dressed in our room. When he walked past us, he stopped for a moment. I couldnt bear to look at him, so I turned to face the window. My daughter just waved at him with a sweet, innocent smile. The next time I saw him was when he came back to gather some of his things.
I still cant wrap my head around how a family can fall apart so suddenly, just in a single moment. After everything, how does one ever trust a man again? Twenty-eight years together. All those loving gestures and beautiful words. And in the enddivorce.
