You know, I live with my mumweve always stuck together. She’s 86 now, if you can believe it. Life just took an unexpected turn for me; I never got married and I dont have any children. Funny how things unfold, isnt it? Im 57 now; my birthday was not long ago. It was just me and Mum celebrating with a little cake. Honestly, theres no one else to invite round. I don’t have any girlfriends, and were really the only family left.
We live quietly together, always looking out for each other. Mums health isnt what it used to be, but shes a tough old girlshe still gets herself out for a walk when she feels up to it. I sometimes wonder what Ill do when shes not around any more, but honestly, shes in good spirits and keeps soldiering on.
Im retired, but I still do a bit of work here and there, just to make ends meet. Our pensions dont cover enough for everything, but I dont let it get to me. I feel so fortunate to have my lovely mum with me. Its easy to forget that lots of people have it tougherno home, no family, nothing to fall back on.
Our days are gentle and simple. In the evenings, well brew up a cup of tea, get our knitting out, watch a favourite telly series or an old film together. At weekends, Ill bake a cake and well have the neighbours over for a slice and a natter. Theyll tell us all about their families and whats going on in their lives. Theres something lovely about feeling genuinely happy for others when things are going well for them. I always say a little prayer that nothing bad comes our way and that we can keep on living like this.
This is how we carry on, just the two of us, day by day. I just hope we can keep this peaceful little life going for as long as possiblefor me and for Mum.
