Tonight, I found myself caught in a bizarre, foggy scene on a London double-decker. Everything shimmered, as if seen through rain on a window. A wrinkled old lady, mustve been about eighty, climbed aboard at the Piccadilly stop. Her hands trembled as she fished a kerchief out of her battered handbagcrumpled banknotes tucked secretly inside, like little paper secrets.
She counted out exact pounds with painstaking slowness, then kindly asked the driver, who looked no older than twenty-five, to please let her off at the next stop by the corner shop. He nodded, eyes as blue and endless as the Thames in July. When they arrived, he waited for her, as usual. She held out the notes and murmured with a wobbly smile, Thank you, my dear boy.
But the driver, whose name badge read William Frost, didnt take her money. Instead, he tucked his wallet into his coat, grinned mischievously, and declared hed be back in three minutes. Without warning, he dashed into the emerald gloom of the shop, returning moments later with his arms cradling four bottles of milk, thick cream, a loaf of brown bread, a bag of pasta, and a package of lamb chops. He handed her the unexpected bounty.
The old lady, flustered, protested, Oh, William, you shouldnt have, my pension does for bread and this and that. Her voice trembled like violin strings in the wind.
But William just smiled, gentle but firm: If you dont take these, Ill be forced to throw them away.
Tears gleamed in her eyes, catching the streetlamps glow. She blessed him with all her heart, words trailing after him as he climbed back into the drivers seat, her blessing curling like smoke in the air.
Then, dreamlike, another womana sharp-faced sort in her fortiesbegan to lecture the whole aisle, Was it really worth spending your money and making us late for a moment of gratitude?
William turned slowly, calm as a Sunday morning. Without raising his voice, he opened the doors once more and announced, With people like you about, its no wonder the old folk think the younger ones are all rotten. All you teach your kids is to be greedy and two-faced!
The complaining woman flushed a furious, tomato-red, tumbling out onto the pavement. She disappeared into a sudden London mist. The rest of us watched in awe as William drove on, the city shimmering outside, his kindness echoing in that strange, dreamlit bus. If only England had more folk like him!
